J. ZUNDEL.

EMPYREAN. S. M.

1. My soul, repeat His praise, Whose mercies are so great; Whose anger is so

[blocks in formation]

2 High as the heavens are raised Above the ground we tread, grace

So far the riches of His
Our highest thoughts exceed.
3 His power subdues our sins,

And His forgiving love,
Far as the east is from the west,
Doth all our guilt remove.

4 The pity of the Lord

To those that fear His Name,
Is such as tender parents feel;

He knows our feeble frame.

5 Our days are as the grass,

Or like the morning flower;

If one sharp blast sweep o'er the field,
It withers in an hour.

6 But Thy compassions, Lord,

35

To endless years endure;

And children's children ever find Thy words of promise sure.

WILLIAM GOODE.

1 Now let our songs arise,
In new exalted strains;
Let earth repeat it to the skies;
The Lord, the Saviour reigns!

2 Sing to the Lord, our God,

And bless His sacred Name; His great salvation, all abroad, From day to day proclaim.

3 Great is the eternal Lord,
And great must be His praise;
O'er all the gods, on high adored,
His mightier arm He'll raise.

4 Through earth, let every tribe,
Let every nation, sing;
Glory, and grace, and might ascribe,
To our eternal King.

36

1 To God, the only wise,

ISAAC WATTS.

Our Saviour, and our King,
Let all the saints below the skies
Their humble praises bring.

2 'Tis His almighty love,

His counsel, and His care, Preserve us safe from sin and death, And every hurtful snare.

3 He will present our souls,

Unblemished and complete,
Before the glory of His face,
With joys divinely great.

4 Then all the chosen seed

Shall meet around the throne;
Shall bless the conduct of His grace,
And make His wonders known.

5 To our Redeemer, God,
Wisdom and power belong;
Immortal crowns of majesty,
And everlasting song.

[blocks in formation]

day of joy and light,

Arr. by L. MASON.

1. {0 day of rest and gladness,

balm of care and sadness, Most beautiful, most bright; On thee, the high and low-ly,

9:4 24

Bend-ing before the throne, Sing holy, holy, holy, To God the Three in

One.

37

CHRISTOPHER WORDSWORTH.

2 On thee, at the creation,
The light first had its birth;

On thee, for our salvation,

Christ rose from depths of earth;

On thee, our Lord, victorious,
The Spirit sent from heaven,

And thus on thee, most glorious,
A triple light was given.

3 Thou art a cooling fountain

In life's dry, dreary sand;
From thee, like Pisgah's mountain
We view our promised land;
A day of sweet refection,

A day of holy love,
A day of resurrection

From earth to things above.

4 To-day on weary nations

The heavenly manna falls;
To holy convocations

The silver trumpet calls,
Where gospel light is glowing
With pure and radiant beams,
And living water flowing

With soul-refreshing streams.

5 New graces ever gaining

From this our day of rest,
We reach the rest remaining
To spirits of the blest;

38

To Holy Ghost be praises,

To Father, and to Son; The Church her voice upraises To Thee, blest Three in One.

JOHN OF DAMASCUS: J. M. NEALE.

1 THE day of resurrection,
Earth, tell it out abroad;
The Passover of gladness,
The Passover of God.
From death to life eternal,

From earth unto the sky,
Our Christ hath brought us over,
With hymns of victory.

2 Our hearts be pure from evil,
That we may see aright
The Lord in rays eternal
Of resurrection-light;
And, listening to His accents,
May hear, so calm and plain,
His own "All hail!" and, hearing,
May raise the victor-strain.

3 Now let the heavens be joyful;
Let earth her song begin;
Let the round world keep triumph,
And all that is therein;
Invisible and visible,

Their notes let all things blend,
For Christ the Lord hath risen,
Our joy that hath no end.

x.

SABBATH. 7. 6 lines.

L. MASON.

1. Safely thro' another week, God has brought us on our way; Let us now a bless-ing

seek, Waiting in His courts to day: Day of all the week the

best, Emblem

of

eternal rest; Day of all the week the best, Em-blem of e - er - nal rest.

TAPPAN. C. M.

G. KINGSLEY.

3

Frequent the day of God re-turns To shed its quick-'ning beams; And yet how

slow de-votion burns, And yet how slow devotion burns, How languid are its flames.

[blocks in formation]

1 FREQUENT the day of God returns
To shed its quickening beams;
And yet how slow devotion burns,
How languid are its flames.

2 Accept our faint attempts to love,
Our frailties, Lord, forgive;
We would be like Thy saints above,
And praise Thee while we live.

3 Increase, O Lord, our faith and hope, And fit us to ascend

Where the assembly ne'er breaks up,
The Sabbath ne'er will end;

4 Where we shall breathe in heavenly air,
With heavenly lustre shine,
Before the throne of God appear,

And feast on love divine.

5 Where we, in high seraphic strains,
Shall all our powers employ;
Delighted range the ethereal plains,
And take our fill of joy.

1 THIS is the day the Lord hath made;
He calls the hours His own;
Let heaven rejoice, let earth be glad,
And praise surround the throne.

2 To-day He rose, and left the dead,
And Satan's empire fell;

To-day the saints His triumphs spread,
And all His wonders tell.

3 Hosanna to th' anointed King,
To David's Holy Son;

Help us, O Lord, descend, and bring
Salvation from Thy throne.

4 Blest be the Lord, who comes to men With messages of grace;

Who comes, in God His Father's name,
To save our sinful race.

5 Hosanna, in the highest strains
The Church on earth can raise ;
The highest heavens, in which He reigns,
Shall give Him nobler praise.
