Exhortation against Sectarian Spirit. 1 Let party names no more The Christian world o'erspread : 2 Among the saints on earth 3 Let envy and ill will Be banished far away; 4 Thus will the church below Resemble that above; Where no discordant sounds are heard, But all is peace and love. 257. Love to the Church. 1 I love thy kingdom, Lord, The house of thine abode, The church our blest Redeemer saved, With his own precious blood. 2 If e'er to bless thy sons, My voice, or hands deny, These hands let useful skill forsake, 3 If e'er my heart forget 4 For her my tears shall fall; For her my prayers ascend; 258. Saints Rejoicing. 1 Now let our voices join To form a sacred song; 2 How straight the path appears, 3 But flowers of paradise In rich profusion spring; 4 All honor to his name, Who marks the shining way,To him who leads the wand'rers on To realms of endless day. 260. Man's dependence. 1 Beware of Peter's word, Nor confidently say, "I never will deny the Lord," But "grant I never may." 2 Man's wisdom is to seek His strength in God alone; And e'en an angel would be weak, Who trusted in his own. 3 Retreat beneath his wings, And in his grace confide; This more exalts the King of kings Than all your works beside. 4 In Jesus is our store; Grace issues from his throne; Whoever says, "I want no more," Confesses he has none. 262. The Way of Sin not the Way to Heaven. 1 Can sinners hope for heaven, Who love this world so well? Or dream of future happiness, While on the road to hell? 2 Can sin's deceitful way Conduct to Zion's hill ? 3 Shall they hosannas sing, With an unhallowed tongue? Shall palms adorn the guilty hand Which does its neighbor wrong? 4 Thy grace, O God, alone, Good hopes can e'er afford! 263. Adoption. 1 Behold! what wondrous grace To call them sons of God! 2 'Tis no surprising thing, That we should be unknown; The Jewish world knew not their King, God's everlasting Son. 3 Nor does it yet appear, How great we must be made; But when we see our Saviour here, We shall be like our head. 4 A hope, so much divine, May trials well endure; May purge our souls from sense and sin, As Christ the Lord is pure. Faith prevailing in Trouble. 1 If, through unruffled seas, 2 But should the surges rise, And rest delay to come, 3 Soon shall our doubts and fears 4 Teach us, in every state, To make thy will our own; And when the joys of sense depart, To live by faith alone. 265. Thanksgiving. 1 Thy bounties, gracious Lord, 2 With joy thy people bring Their offerings round thy throne; With thankful souls, behold, we pay A tribute of thine own. 3 Oh may this sacrifice To thee, the Lord, ascend, An odor of a sweet perfume, 4 Well pleased our God shall view The products of his grace; With endless life shall he fulfil His kindest promises. 266. Faith in Christ our Sacrifice. 1 Not all the blood of beasts, 2 But Christ, the heavenly Lamb, And richer blood than they. 3 My faith would lay her hand On that dear head of thine,While like a penitent I stand, And there confess my sin. 4 My soul looks back to see The burdens thou didst bear,When hanging on the cursed tree,― And hopes her guilt was there. 5 Believing, we rejoice To see the curse remove; We bless the Lamb with cheerful voice, And sing his bleeding love. 267. Holy Love. 1 Love is the strongest tie That can our souls unite; 2 We run in God's commands 3 Love softens all our toil, And makes our bondage blest; The gloomy desert wears a smile, When love inspires the breast. The Christian's Warfare. 1 Soldiers of Christ, arise, And put your armor on, Strong in the strength which God supplies Through his eternal Son; 2 Strong in the Lord of Hosts, And in his mighty power; Is more than conqueror. 3 Stand then in his great might, With all his strength endued; But take to arm you for the fight,. The panoply of God: 4 That, having all things done, Ye may o'ercome through Christ alone, 5 From strength to strength go on, 270. A Psalm before Sermon. 1 Come, sound his praise abroad, 2 Come, worship at his throne; Come, bow before the Lord: We are his work, and not our own, He form'd us by his word. 3 To-day attend his voice, Nor dare provoke his rod; Come, like the people of his choice, And own your gracious God. 271. The Church, the Honor and Safety of a Nation. 1 Great is the Lord our God, And let his praise be great; 2 These temples of his grace, How beautiful they stand! The honors of our native place The bulwarks of our land. 3 Oft have our fathers told, Our eyes have often seen, 4 In ev'ry new distress We'll to his house repair; We'll think upon his wondrous grace, 272. Confidence in God. 1 Give to the winds thy fears; Hope, and be undismay'd; God hears thy sighs, and counts thy tears; He shall lift up thy head. 2 Through waves, and clouds, and storms, He gently clears the way; Wait thou his time; so shall this night 3 Still heavy is thy heart? Still sink thy spirits down? 4 What though thou rulest not! Prayer for the Spirit. 1 Come, Holy Spirit, come, Let thy bright beams arise; Dispel the sorrow from our mindsThe darkness from our eyes. 2 Convince us of our sin; Then lead to Jesus' blood; And to our wond'ring view reveal The secret love of God. 3 Revive our drooping faith; Our doubts and fears remove; And kindle in our breasts the flame Of never-dying love. 4 'Tis thine to cleanse the heartTo sanctify the soul Το fresh life in ev'ry part, pour And new-create the whole. 5 Dwell, Spirit, in our hearts; Our minds from bondage free; Then shall we know, and praise, and love, The Father, Son, and Thee. 274. Infants given to God in Baptism. 1 Great God, now condescend 2 Oh, what a vast delight, To lead their souls to thee. Send thy good Spirit from above, And make these children thine. 275. Hope of the Resurrection. 1 And must this body die? This mortal frame decay? And must these active limbs of mine Lie mouldering in the clay! 2 God, my Redeemer, lives, 3 Arrayed in glorious grace Shall these vile bodies shine, 4 These lively hopes we owe 276. Preserving Grace. 1 To God, the only wise, Let all the saints below the skies, 2 'Tis his almighty love, His counsel and his care, Preserves us safe from sin and death, And every hurtful snare. 3 He will present our souls, Unblemished and complete, Before the glories of his face, With joys divinely great. 4 To our Redeemer, God, Wisdom, with power, belongs; Immortal crowns of majesty, And everlasting songs. |
