Hope of Heaven our Support on Earth. 1 When I can read my title clear To mansions in the skies, I bid farewell to ev'ry fear, And wipe my weeping eyes. 2 Should earth against my soul engage, 3 Let cares like a wild deluge come, My God, my heaven, my all: 4 There shall I bathe my weary soul And not a wave of trouble roll 173. Prayer for the Spread of the Gospel. 1 Great God, the nations of the earth 2 But, Lord, thy richer love has sent Unveiling what rich stores of grace 3 Lord, when shall these glad tidings spread Shall hear the joyful sound. 4 Smile, Lord, on each divine attempt And build, on sin's demolish'd throne, 174. Death in Trespasses and Sins. 1 How helpless guilty nature lies, The heart unchanged can never rise 2 Can aught beneath a power divine To form the heart anew. 3 'Tis thine, the passions to recall, 4 To chase the shades of death away, A beam of heaven-a vital ray, 'Tis thine alone to give. 5 Oh! change these wretched hearts of ours, And give them life divine; Then shall our passions and our powers, 175. Retirement. 1 Far from the world, O Lord, I flee, 2 The calm retreat, the silent shade, 3 Then if thy Spirit touch the soul, Evening Worship in the Family. 1 O Lord! another day is flown, And we, a lonely band, Are met once more before thy throne, To bless thy fostering hand. 2 And wilt thou bend a listening ear Thou wilt!-for thou dost love to hear 3 And Jesus! thou thy smiles wilt deign, As we before thee pray; For thou didst bless the infant train, 4 Thy heavenly grace to each impart ; And shed abroad in every heart 178. Love. 1 Happy the heart where graces reign, Where love inspires the breast: Love is the brightest of the train, And strengthens all the rest. 2 Knowledge, alas! 'tis all in vain, And all in vain our fear; Our stubborn sins will fight and reign, 3 'Tis love that makes our cheerful feet In swift obedience move; The devils know, and tremble too,- 4 This is the grace that lives, and sings, 179. For the Lord's Day Morning. 1 Lord, in the morning thou shalt hear My voice ascending high; To thee will I direct my prayer, 2 Up to the hills where Christ is gone, To plead for all his saints, Presenting at his Father's throne Our songs and our complaints. 3 Thou art a God, before whose sight 4 But to thy house will I resort, 5 O may thy Spirit guide my feet, 180. Relieving Christ in his Members. 1 Jesus, my Lord, how rich thy grace! 2 High on a throne of radiant light 3 But thou hast brethren here below, The partners of thy grace, And wilt confess their humble names Before thy Father's face. 1 O Lord, our languid souls inspire, For here we trust thou art! 2 Shew us some token of thy love, That we may render praise. 3 The feeling heart, the melting eye, The humble mind bestow; To make our graces grow. 4 May we in faith receive thy word, In faith present our prayers; And in the presence of our Lord, Unbosom all our cares. 5 And may the gospel's joyful sound, Enforc'd by mighty grace, 182. The Examples of Christ and the Saints. 1 Give me the wings of faith, to rise Within the vail, and see The saints above, how great their joys, How bright their glories be! 2 Once they were mourning here below, And wet their couch with tears: They wrestled hard, as we do now, With sins, and doubts, and fears. 3 I ask them, whence their vict'ry came; They, with united breath, Ascribe their conquest to the LambTheir triumph to his death. 4 They mark'd the footsteps he had trod; 5 Our glorious Leader claims our praise, 183. Saturday night. 1 Begone, my worldly cares, away, Nor dare to tempt my sight; Let me begin th' ensuing day, Before I end this night. 2 Yes, let the work of pray'r and praise 3 Let the past mercies of the week 4 On wings of expectation borne, Abraham's Blessing on the Gentiles. 1 How large the promise-how divineTo Abra'am and his seed; "I'll be a God to thee and thine, Supplying all their need!" 2 The words of his extensive love From age to age endure; And seals the blessing sure. 3 Jesus the ancient faith confirms, To our great fathers given! And calls them heirs of heaven. 4 Our God, how faithful are his ways! 186. Regeneration. 1 Not all the outward forms on earth, Nor rites that God has given, Nor will of man, nor blood, nor birth, Can raise a soul to heaven. 2 The sovereign will of God alone 3 The Spirit, like some heavenly wind, Our quicken'd souls awake, and rise 187. Various Success of the Gospel. 1 Christ and his cross is all our theme; 2 But souls, enlighten'd from above, They see what wisdom, power, and love, 3 The vital savour of his name, 188. Not ashamed of the Gospel. 1 I'm not asham'd to own my Lord, 2 Jesus, my God, I know his name,- Nor will he put my soul to shame, 3 Firm as his throne his promise stands, And he can well secure What I've committed to his hands, Till the decisive hour. 4 Then will he own my worthless name, Before his father's face; Appoint my soul a place. 4 O wondrous knowledge, deep and high! Where can a creature hide! Within thy circling arms I lie, Beset on ev'ry side. 5 So let thy grace surround me still, And like a bulwark prove, To guard my soul from ev'ry ill, 191. Access to the Throne of Grace by a Mediator. 1 Come, let us lift our joyful eyes Up to the courts above; And smile to see our Father there 2 Once 'twas a seat of dreadful wrath, 3 Rich were the drops of Jesus' blood, 4 Now we may bow before his feet, 5 The peaceful gates of heavenly bliss High let us raise our notes of praise, 192. Doxology. Let God the Father, and the Son, And Spirit be ador'd, Where there are works to make him known, Or saints to love the Lord. |
