Excerpt from Vestiges of the Natural History of Creation: Its Argument Examined and Exposed

These books are very easy to write, as will appear; as easy as a collection of ghost stories explained, or a catalogue of impostures discovered, or charities abused, culled out Of the last leaves of the Mendicity Society's Reports; leaving without mention the heaps Of dis tressing and deserving cases relieved, with which the rest of their pages are crowded and consecrated.

The volume before us is the very romance of philo sophy - for in these times, when children give up fairy tales, and read and talk philosophy, philosophy also must have its romances, as well as war and love, with the due foundation on fact, and finishing of fancy; and all the chiselling and squaring and fitting of the cun ning workman, by which he fashions the rudest and most unlikely lumps, to form the beautiful and symms tricel structure which he has pre-determined upon.
