1. Saviour, breathe an eve- ning blessing, Ere re- pose our spirits seal;

1 SAVIOUR, breathe an evening blessing, Ere repose our spirits seal;

Sin and want we come confessing; Thou canst save, and thou canst heal. 2 Though destruction walk around us, Though the arrow near us fly, Angel guards from thee surround us; We are safe if thou art nigh.

3 Though the night be dark and dreary, Darkness cannot hide from thee; Thou art he who, never weary, Watcheth where thy people be.

4 Should swift death this night o'ertake us,
And our couch become our tomb,
May the morn in heaven awake us,
Clad in light and deathless bloom.
180.

1 LORD, dismiss us with thy blessing;
Bid us now depart in peace;
Still on heavenly manna feeding,
Let our faith and love increase.

2 Fill each breast with consolation;
Up to thee our hearts we raise;
When we reach our blissful station,
Then we'll give thee nobler praise.

3 Praise the Father, earth and heaven;
Praise the Son, the Spirit praise;

As it was, and is, be given
Glory through eternal days.

1 ALMIGHTY God, thy word is cast Like seed into the ground; Now let the dew of heaven descend,

And righteous fruits abound.

2 Let not the foe of Christ or man
This holy seed remove,
But give it root in every heart
To bring forth fruits of love.

3 Let not the world's deceitful cares
The rising plant destroy,
But let it yield, a hundred-fold,
The fruits of peace and joy.

4 Nor let thy word, so kindly sent
To raise us to thy throne,
Return to thee, and sadly tell
That we reject thy Son.

Blessed Saviour,

Hear and answer from above.

1 Blest are the souls that hear and know
The gospel's joyful sound;
Peace shall attend the path they go,
And light their steps surround.

2 Their joy shall bear their spirits up
Through their Redeemer's name;
His righteousness exalts their hope,
Nor Satan dares condemn.

3 The Lord, our glory and defence,
Strength and salvation gives;
Israel, thy King forever reigns,
Thy God forever lives.

Psalm 19.

L. P. M. 3 This is the field where hidden lies,

191.
1 I LOVE the volume of thy word;
What light and joy those leaves afford
To souls benighted and distressed!
Thy precepts guide my doubtful way,
Thy fear forbids my feet to stray,

Thy promise leads my heart to rest.
2 From the discoveries of thy law,
The perfect rules of life I draw:

These are my study and delight,
Not honey so invites the taste,
Nor gold, that has the furnace passed,
Appears so pleasing to the sight.

3 Who knows the errors of his thoughts?
My God! forgive my secret faults,

And from presumptuous sins restrain; Accept my poor attempts of praise, That I have read thy book of grace, And book of nature not in vain.

Where love in all its glory shines, And truth is drawn in

1 Gop, in the gospel of his Son,

Makes his eternal counsels known,
Where love in all its glory shines,
And truth is drawn in fairest lines.

2 Here, sinners of an humble frame
May taste his grace, and learn his name;
May read, in characters of blood,
The wisdom, power, and grace of God.
Here, faith reveals, to mortal eyes,
A brighter world beyond the skies;
Here, shines the light which guides our
way

From earth to realms of endless day.
4 Oh! grant us grace, almighty Lord!
To read and mark thy holy word,
Its truths with meekness to receive,
And by its holy precepts live.

[blocks in formation]

1 THE heavens declare thy glory, Lord!
In every star thy wisdom shines;
But when our eyes behold thy word,
We read thy name in fairer lines.

2 The rolling sun, the changing light,
And nights and days thy power confess,
But the blest volume thou hast writ,
Reveals thy justice and thy grace.

3 Sun, moon, and stars, convey thy praise
Round the whole earth, and never stand:
So, when thy truth began its race,
It touched and glanced on every land.

1 THE starry firmament on high,
And all the glories of the sky,
Yet shine not to thy praise, O Lord,
So brightly as thy written word.
2 The hopes that holy word supplies,
Its truths divine and precepts wise,
In each a heavenly beam I see,
And every beam conducts to thee.
3 Almighty Lord, the sun shall fail,
The moon forget her nightly tale,
And deepest silence hush on high
The radiant chorus of the sky;—
4 But fixed for everlasting years,

Unmoved, amid the wreck of spheres,
Thy word shall shine in cloudless day,
When heaven and earth have passed away.
