The oath of office was then administered to the Senators elect by the Hon. Chas. H. Larrabee, Judge of the Supreme Court,

The Hon. Timothy Burns, Lieutenant Governor, being absent, on motion of Mr. Dunn, the Senate proceeded to the election of a President pro tem.

And the Roll having been called,

Voted for the Hon. DUNCAN C. REED.

Whereupon Duncan C. Reed, having received all the votes cast, was declared duly elected President pro tempore of the Senate. And, thereupon, Mr. Reed took the Chair, and addressed the Senate as follows:

SENATORS:-You will please accept my thanks for the honor you have conferred upon me. In the discharge of the duties of the

chair, I rely upon your generous aid and indulgence. While its duties shall devolve upon me, I shall endeavor to merit your approbation by the observance of a strict impartiality toward each and all of the members of this body.

On motion of Mr. Dunn,

The Senate proceeded to the election of Chief Clerk,
And the roll having been called,

Messrs. Alban, Allen, Bashford, Blair, Bovee, Bowen, Briggs, Cary, Dunn, Hunter, Lewis, McLane, Miller, Pinkney, Prentice, Reed, Sharpstein, Smith, Squires, Stewart, Sterling, Vittum, Wakely, Whittlesey, Wiel,-25.

Voted for John K. Williams.

Whereupon, Mr. Williams having received the entire vote cast, was declared duly elected Chief Clerk of the Senate-and thereupon received the oath of office.

On motion of Mr. McLane,

The Senate proceeded to the election of Sergeant-at-arms,
And the roll having been called,

Messrs. Allen, Blair, Bovee, Bowen, Cary, Dunn, Hunter, Lewis, McLane, Miller, Prentice, Reed, Sharpstein, Smith, Squires, Stewart, Sterling, Vittum, Wakely, Whittlesey, and Wiel,-21. Voted for Thomas Hood-and

Messrs. Alban, Bashford, Briggs and Pinkney-4
Voted for Thomas Reynolds,

Whereupon, Thomas Hood, having received a majority of all the votes cast, was declared duly elected Sergeant-at-arms.

And thereupon the oath of office was administered to Mr. Hood by His Honor, Chas. H. Larrabee.

Mr. Alban introduced the following resolution:

Resolved, That the Chief Clerk and Sergeant-at-arms be authorized to employ the necessary help for their respective departments, Which was adopted.

Mr. Prentice introduced the following resolution:

Resolved, That the Rules of the last. Senate be adopted as the Rules of of the present Senate, until further ordered.

Which was adopted.

Mr. Alban introduced the following resolution:

Resolved, That the Chief Clerk be requested to inform the Assembly that the Senate is now organized, and ready to proceed to business.

Which was adopted.

The Chief Clerk announced to the President and the Senate the appointment of GEO. H. PAUL as Assistant Clerk of the Senate, and the oath of office was thereupon administered to Mr. Paul. The Chief Clerk also aunounced the following appointments: For Transcribing Clerk-John A. Byrne.

For Enrolling Clerk-R. P. Clement.

For Engrossing Clerk-Lyman Cowdry.

For Assistant Enrolling and Engrossing Clerk-H. E. Hubbard. On motion of Mr. Wakeley, the Senate adjourned until 3 o'clock, P. M.

3 O'CLOCK, P. M.

Mr. Wakeley introduced the following resolution:

Resolved, That a committee of three be appointed to revise the Rules of the Senate.

Which was adopted; and

Messrs. Wakeley, Pinkney and Squires were appointed said committee.

Mr. Stewart introduced the following resolution:

Resolved, That the Chief Clerk be requested to furnish the Postmaster at Madison, with a list of the Senators, and that their postage during the present session be paid out of the State Treasury,

Which was adopted.

Mr. Whittlesey introduced the following resolution:

Resolved, That the Librarian be and hereby is directed to distribute to the Senators who have not received the same, the acts, resolves, and journals of the Legislature of the State of Wisconsin for the session of 1852,

Which was adopted.

Mr. McLane introduced the following resolution:

Resolved, That a committee of two be appointed to aet in conjunction with a similar committee of the Assembly to inform the Governor that the two Houses are now organized and ready to receive any communication which he may have to make.

Which was adopted.

And Messrs. McLane and Stewart were appointed said committee.

Mr. Stewart introduced the following resolution:

Resolved, By the Senate, the Assembly concurring, that the joint rules and orders of the Senate and Assembly for the session of 1852 be adopted for the government of the two houses during the present session,

Which was adopted.

Mr. Whittlesey introduced the following resolution:

Resolved, That each member of the Senate be allowed to receive -newspapers per week to be paid for out of the State Treas

ury.

Mr. Whittlesy moved to fill the blank with "twenty."

Which was agreed to.

Mr. Wakelely moved to strike out the word "week" and substi tute the word "day."

Which was adopted.

And the resolution as amended was adopted.

Mr. Alban introduced the following resolution:

Resolved, That the Clergymen resident in Madison be invited by the President to open the sessions of the Senate with prayer during the present session,

Which was adopted.

On motion of Mr. Pinkney,
The Senate adjourned.

THURSDAY, January 13, 1853.

Prayer by the Rev. W. H. Thomson.

Journal of yesterday was read and approved.

Mr. Alban moved to reconsider the vote of yesterday by which was adopted the resolution of the Senator from Dane in reference to newspapers for the Senate.

Mr. Blair moved that the resolution be laid upon the table,
Which was disagreed to.

And the motion to reconsider was adopted.

Mr. Alban moved to amend the resolution by striking out all after the word "Resolved," and inserting "that each member of the Senate be allowed to receive for distribution thirty daily newspapers or their Equivalent per day to be paid for as other Expenses of the Senate are paid, and such papers shall be furnished singly and in wrappers."

Mr. Stewart moved to amend the amendment by striking out the words "are paid,"

Which was agreed to.

Mr. Stewart moved to amend the amendment of Mr. Alban by striking out the words "thirty" and inserting "twenty,"

Which was disagreed to.

And the amendment of Mr. Alban as amended was adopted, and the question upon the adoption of the resolution as amended having been put,

It was decided in the affirmative, and the ayes and noes having been called for, those who voted in the affirmative were,

Messrs. Alban, Allen, Blair, Bovee, Briggs, Cary, Hunter, McLane, Miller, Reed, Sharpstein, Smith, Vittum, Wakeley, Whittlesey and Wiel,-16.

Those who voted in the negative were,

Messrs. Bashford, Bowen, Dunn, Lewis, Pinkney, Prentice, Squires, Stewart and Sterling,-9.
