AND OTHER POEMS BY THOMAS BABINGTON MACAULAY EDITED BY FRANKLIN T. BAKER, A.M. PROFESSOR OF ENGLISH IN TEACHERS COLLEGE, New York THE MACMILLAN COMPANY LONDON: MACMILLAN & CO., LTD. 1911 All rights reserved HARVARD 45*303 COPYRIGHT, 1904, BY THE MACMILLAN COMPANY. Set up and electrotyped. Published August, 1904. PREFACE THE present edition includes all of Macaulay's poetical work, except a fugitive jeu d'esprit or two, and accepts also the doubtful convention which places the inscriptions among his poetry. The author's notes to the Lays have been reprinted in full, with the exception of some footnotes of interest only to the classical scholar. In the other notes, the editor's purpose has been not to give full information, but to select that which is most necessary for explanation of the text. The editor takes pleasure in expressing his thanks to Miss Grace L. MacMullen of the Columbia Library for assistance in finding and verifying some of the material of the notes. TEACHERS COLLEGE, |
