4 'Tis thine to cleanse the heart, To fanctify the soul,

To pour

5

fresh life on ev'ry part
And new create the whole.

If thou, celestial Dove,
Thine influence withdraw,
What eafy victims foon we fall
To confcience, wrath, and law!
6 No longer burns our love;
Our faith and patience fail
Our fin revives; and death and hell
Our feeble fouls affail.

Dwell therefore in our hearts;
Our minds from bondage free:

Then shall we know, and praise, & love
The Father, Son, and Thee..

HYMN 234°

CHRIST OUR WISDOM, RIGHTEOUSNESS, SANCTIFICATION, AND REDEMPTION..

Believers own they are but blind;

They own themselves unwife;

But wisdom in, the LORD they find,
Who opens all their eyes.

2 Unrighteous are they all when try'd;
But God himself declares,
In Jesus they are justify'd
His righteousness is theirs.

3 That we're unholy needs no proof;
We forely feel the fall:
But CHRIST has holiness enough
To fanctify us all.

4 Expos'd by fin to God's just wrath,
We look to CHRIST and view
Redemption in his blood by faith;
And full redemption too.

5 Some this, fome that, good virtue teach, To rectify the foul:

But we firft after Jesus reach,
And richly grafp the whole.

6 TO JESUS join'd we all that's good
From him our head derive:

We eat his flesh and drink his blood; And by, and in him live.

HYMN 235:

DIVINE STRENGTH IN HUMAN WEAKNESS.

I

Y whom was David taught

BT aim the dreadful blow,

When the Goliah fought,

And laid the Gittite low?

Nor fword nor fpear the strippling took, But chofe a pebble from the brook.

2 'Twas Ifrael's GoD and King,
Who fent him to the fight,
Who gave him ftrength to fling,
And skill to aim aright:

3

Ye feeble faints, your ftrength endures,
Because young David's GOD is yours.

Who order'd Gideon forth,

To ftorm th' invader's camp,

With arms of little worth,

A pitcher, and a lamp?

The trumpets made his coming known,
And all the hoft were overthrown.

4 O, I have seen the day,

5

When with a fingle word,

GOD helping me to fay

My truft is in the LORD;"

My foul has quell'd a thousand foes,
Fearless of all that wou'd oppose.

But unbelief, felf-will,

Self-righteousness and pride,
How often do they steal

My weapon from my fide!

Yet David's LORD, and Gideon's friend,
Will help his fervant to the end.

HYMN 236.

THE DECEITFULNESS OF SIN

SIN

IN has a thousand treach❜rous arts
To practise on the mind,

With flatt'ring looks fhe tempts our hearts,
But leaves a fting behind.

2 With names of virtue fhe deceives
The aged and the young;

And while the heedlefs wretch believes,
She makes his fetters ftrong.

3 She pleads for all the joys fhe brings,
And gives a fair pretence;
But cheats the foul of heav'nly things,
And chains it down to fenfe.

4 So on a tree divinely fair,
Grew the forbidden food;

I

Our mother took the poifon there,
And tainted all her blood.

HYMN

237.

PRAISE TO THE REDEEMER.

L

ET us love and fing and wonder, Let us praise the Saviour's name; He has hufh'd the law's loud thunder, He has quench'd mount Sinai's flame; He has wash'd us with his blood, He has brought us nigh to God.

2 Let us love the LORD who bought us, Pity'd us when enemies;

Call'd us by his grace, and taught us,
Gave us ears, and gave us eyes.
He has wafh'd us with his blood,
He prefents our fouls to God.
3 Let us fing, tho' fierce temptation
Threaten hard to bear us down;
For the LORD our ftrong falvation,
Holds in view the conqu'ror's crown.
He who wash'd us with his blood,
Soon will bring us home to God.
4 Let us wonder, grace and juftice
Join and point to mercy's ftore:
When thro' grace in CHRIST our truft is,
Juftice fmiles and asks no more.

He who wash'd us with his blood,
Has fecur'd our way to GOD.

5 Let us praise and join the chorus
Of the faints enthron'd on high !
Here they trufted him before us,
Now their praises fill the sky.

Thou haft wash'd us with thy blood,
Thou art worthy, Lamb of GOD!
6 Yes we praise thee, gracious Saviour;
Wonder, love, and blefs thy name;
Pardon, LORD, our poor endeavour,
Pity, for thou knowit our frame.
Wafh our fouls and fongs with blood,
For by thee we come to Gop.
