Thomas Tallis, 1515-85

All praise to Thee, my God, this night, For all the blessings of the light;

Keep me, O keep me, King of kings, Be-neath Thine own al- mighty wings.

[blocks in formation]

2 Forgive me, Lord; for Thy dear Son,
The ill that I this day have done;
That with the world, myself and Thee,
I, ere I sleep, at peace may be.

3 Teach me to live, that I may dread
The grave as little as my bed;
Teach me to die that so I may
Rise glorious at the awful day.

4 O may my soul on Thee repose,

And with sweet sleep mine eyelids close-
Sleep, that may me more vigorous make
To serve my God when I awake.

5 When in the night I sleepless lie,

My soul with heavenly thoughts supply;
Let no ill dreams disturb my rest,
No powers of darkness me molest.

T. Ken, 1693

Free from care, from labor free, Lord, I would commune with Thee.

564 6, 4, 6, 6.

J. H. Hopkins, 1872

[blocks in formation]

Let love a wake, and pay Her eve-ning sac

2 As Christ upon the cross
His head inclined,

And to His Father's hand

His parting soul resigned;

3 So now herself my soul
Would wholly give
Into His sacred charge,

In whom all spirits live;

4 So now beneath His eye
Would calmly rest,
Without a wish or thought
Abiding in the breast,

5 Save that His will be done,
Whate'er betide,

Dead to herself, and dead
In Him to all beside.

6 Thus would I live; yet now
Not I, but He,

In all His power and love
Henceforth alive in me.

7 One sacred Trinity,

One Lord divine;

May I be ever His,

And He for ever mine.

2 Let evil thoughts and spirits flee before us;
Till morning cometh, watch, O Father, o'er us;
In soul and body Thou from harm defend us,
Thine angels send us.

3 Let pious thoughts be ours when sleep o'ertakes us;
Our earliest thoughts be Thine when morning wakes us;
All day serve Thee, in all that we are doing
Thy praise pursuing.

4 Through Thy Beloved soothe the sick and weeping,
And bid the captive lose his griefs in sleeping;
Widows and orphans, we to Thee commend them,
Do Thou befriend them.

5 We have no refuge, none on earth to aid us;
Save Thee, O Father, who Thine own hast made us;
But Thy dear presence will not leave them lonely

Who seek Thee only.

6 Father, Thy name be praised, Thy kingdom given;
Thy will be done on earth, as 'tis in heaven;
Give daily bread; forgive our sins; deliver

Us now and ever.

P. Herbert. 1566
