8 Our everlasting hopes arise
Above the ruinable skies,
Where th' eternal Builder reigns,
And his own courts his power sustains.

HYMN 119. C. M. (II. 69.)

The faithfulness of God in the promises.

BEGIN, my tongue, some heavenly

theme,

And speak some boundless thing;
The mighty works, or mightier name,
Of our eternal King.

2 Tell of his wondrous faithfulness,
And sound his power abroad;
Sing the sweet promise of his grace,
And the performing God.

3 Proclaim" salvation from the Lord
For wretched, dying men;"
His hand has writ the sacred word
With an immortal pen.

4 Engraved as in eternal brass
The mighty promise shines;

Nor can the powers of darkness rase
Those everlasting lines.

5 He that can dash whole worlds to death,
And make them when he please,
He speaks, and that almighty breath
Fulfils his great decrees.

6 His very word of grace is strong
As that which built the skies,
The voice that rolls the stars along
Speaks all the promises.

God the avenger of his saints.

HIGH as the heavens above the ground

Reigns the Creator God;

Wide as the whole creation's bound
Extends his awful rod.

2 Let princes of exalted state
To him ascribe their crown,
Render their homage at his feet,
And cast their glories down.

3 Know that his kingdom is supreme,
Your lofty thoughts are vain;
He calls you gods, that awful name,
But ye must die like men.

4 Then let the sov'reigns of the globe
Not dare to vex the just;

He puts on vengeance like a robe,
And treads the worms to dust.

5 Ye judges of the earth, be wise,
And think of heaven with fear;
The meanest saint that you despise
Has an avenger there.

HYMN 121. C. M. (II. 71.)
Praise to God from all creatures.

THE glories of my Maker God
My joyful voice shall sing,
And call the nations to adore

Their Former and their King.

2 "Twas his right hand that shaped our clay, And wrought this human frame;

But from his own immediate breath
Our nobler spirits came.,

3 We bring our mortal powers to God,
And worship with our tongues;
We claim some kindred with the skies,
And join th' angelic songs.

4 Let grovelling beasts of every shape,
And fowls of every wing,

And rocks, and trees, and fires, and seas,
Their various tribute bring.

5 Ye planets, to his honour shine,
And wheels of nature roll,
Praise him in your unwearied course
Around the steady pole.

6 The brightness of our Maker's name
The wide creation fills,
And his unbounded grandeur flies
Beyond the heavenly hills.

HYMN 122. C. M. (II. 166.)
The Divine Perfections.

HOW shall I praise th' eternal God,

That infinite Unknown!

Who can ascend his high abode,
Or venture near his throne?

Speak we of strength? his arm is strong
To save or to destroy;
Infinite years his life prolong,

And endless is his joy.

He knows no shadow of a change,

Nor alters his decrees;

Firm as a rock his truth remains
To guard his promises.

Justice upon a dreadful throne
Maintains the rights of God;

While Mercy sends her pardons down,
Bought with a Saviour's blood.
Now to my soul, immortal King!
Speak some forgiving word;
Then 'twill be double joy to sing
The glories of my Lord.

HYMN 123. L. M. (II. 167.)

The same.

GREAT God! thy glories shall employ

My holy fear, my humble joy;
My lips in songs of honour bring
Their tribute to th' eternal King.

[His sov'reign power what mortal knows?
If he command, who dare oppose?
With strength he girds himself around,
And treads the rebels to the ground.]

[Who shall pretend to teach him skill,
Or guide the counsels of his will?
His wisdom, like a sea divine,

Flows deep and high beyond our line.]
Th' eternal law before him stands;
His justice, with impartial hands,
Divides to all their due reward,'
Or by the sceptre or the sword.

His mercy, like a boundless sea,
Washes our load of guilt away;
While his own Son came down and died
T'engage his justice on our side.]

( tell me, with a gentle voice,
"Thou art my God," and I'll rejoice!
Fill'd with thy love, I dare proclaim
The brightest honours of thy name.

The same.

JEHOVAH reigns, his throne is high,

His robes are light and majesty; His glory shines with beams so bright, No mortal can sustain the sight.

His terrors keep the world in awe;
His justice guards his holy law;
His love reveals a smiling face;
His truth and promise seal the grace.
3 Through all his works his wisdom shines,
And baffles Satan's deep designs;
His power is sov'reign to fulfil
The noblest counsels of his will.

4 And will this glorious Lord descend;
To be my Father and my Friend?
Then let my songs with angels join,
Heaven is secure, if God be mine.

[blocks in formation]

HE Lord Jehovah reigns,
This throne is built on high;

The garments he assumes
Are light and majesty:
His glories shine

With beams so bright,
No mortal eye
Can bear the sight.

2 The thunders of his hand
Keep the wide world in awe;
His wrath and justice stand
To guard his holy law:
