6 From the discoveries of thy law
The perfect rules of life I draw:
These are my study and delight;
Not honey so invites the taste,
Nor gold that hath the furnace past
Appears so pleasing to the sight.

7 Thy threat'nings wake my slumbering eyes
And warn me where my danger lies;
But 'tis thy blessed gospel, Lord,
That makes my guilty conscience clean,
Converts my soul, subdues my sin,

And gives a free, but large reward.

8 Who knows the errors of his thoughts? My God, forgive my secret faults,

1

And from presumptuous sins restrain :
Accept my poor attempts of praise,
That I have read thy book of grace,
And book of nature, not in vain.

PSALM 21. Ver. 1-9. L. M.
Christ exalted to the kingdom.

DAVID rejoiced in God his strength,

Raised to the throne by special grace; But Christ the Son appears at length, Fulfils the triumph and the praise.

2 How great is the Messiah's joy
In the salvation of thy hand!"

Lord, thou hast raised his kingdom high,
And given the world to his command.

3 Thy goodness grants whate'er he will,
Nor doth the least request withhold;
Blessings of love prevent him still,
And crowns of glory, not of gold.

4 Honour and majesty divine
Around his sacred temples shine;
Bless'd with the favour of thy face,
And length of everlasting days.

PSALM 22. L. M.

Christ's sufferings and exaltation.

Now let our mournful songs record

The dying sorrows of our Lord, When he complain'd in tears and blood, As one forsaken of his God.

2 The Jews beheld him thus forlorn, And shake their heads, and laugh in scorn: "He rescued others from the grave; "Now let him try himself to save. 3 "This is the man did once pretend "God was his Father and his Friend: "If God the blessed loved him so, "Why doth he fail to help him now?" 4 Barbarous people! Cruel priests! How they stood round like savage beasts; Like lions gaping to devour,

When God had left him in their power.

5 They wound his head, his hands, his feet,
Till streams of blood each other meet;
By lot his garments they divide,
And mock the pangs in which he died.

6 But God, his Father, heard his cry;
Raised from the dead, he reigns on high;
The nations learn his righteousness,
And humble sinners taste his grace.

God our Shepherd.

MY shepherd is the living Lord;

Now shall my wants be well supplied;

His providence and holy word
Become my safety and my guide.
In pastures where salvation grows
He makes me feed, he makes me rest;
There living water gently flows,
And all the food divinely bless'd.
My wand'ring feet his ways mistake,
But he restores my soul to peace,
And leads me for his mercy's sake
In the fair paths of righteousness.
Though I walk through the gloomy vale,
Where death and all its terrors are,
My heart and hope shall never fail,
For God my shepherd's with me there.
Amidst the darkness and the deeps
Thou art my comfort, thou my stay;
Thy staff supports my feeble steps,
Thy rod directs my doubtful way.
Surely the mercies of the Lord
Attend his household all their days;
There will I dwell to hear his word,
To seek his face and sing his praise.

PSALM 23. C. M.

God our Shepherd.

1 MY shepherd will supply my need,

Jehovah is his name;

In pastures fresh he makes me feed,
Beside the living stream.

2 He brings my wand'ring spirit back
When I forsake his ways;

And leads me for his mercy's sake
In paths of truth and grace.

3 When I walk through the shades of death, Thy presence is my stay;

A word of thy supporting breath
Drives all my fears away.

4 Thy hand, in sight of all my foes,
Doth still my table spread;
My cup with blessings overflows,
Thine oil anoints my head.

5 The sure provisions of my God
Attend me all my days:

O may thy house be mine abode,
And all my work be praise!

6 There would I find a settled rest,
While others go and come;
No more a stranger or a guest,
But like a child at home.

PSALM 23. S. M.

God our Shepherd.

THE Lord my shepherd is,

I shall be well supplied;

Since he is mine and I am his,
What can I want beside?

He leads me to the place

Where heavenly pasture grows,

Where living waters gently pass,

And full salvation flows.

3

If e'er I go astray,

He doth my soul reclaim;

And guides me in his own right way,

For his most holy name.

While he affords his aid

I cannot yield to fear;

Though I should walk through death's dark shade

My shepherd's with me there.
In spite of all my foes,

Thou dost my table spread;
My cup with blessings overflows,
And joy exalts my head.

The bounties of thy love

Shall crown my following days; Nor from thy house will I remove, Nor cease to speak thy praise.

PSALM 24. L. M.

Saints dwell in heaven.

THIS spacious earth is all the Lord's, And men, and worms, and beasts, and birds,

He raised the building on the seas,

And gave it for their dwelling-place. 2 But there's a brighter world on high, Thy palace, Lord, above the sky: Who shall ascend that bless'd abode, And dwell so near his maker God?

3 He that abhors and fears to sin,

Whose heart is pure, whose hands are clean, Him shall the Lord the Saviour bless, And clothe his soul with righteousness. 4 These are the men, the pious race, That seek the God of Jacob's face : These shall enjoy the blissful sight, And dwell in everlasting light.
