Believe and be saved. John, iii. 16-18.
OT to condemn the sons of men,

N

Did Christ, the Son of God, appear; No weapons in his hands are seen, No flaming sword nor thunder there. 2 Such was the pity of our God, He loved the race of man so well, He sent his Son to bear our load Of sins, and save our souls from hell. 3 Sinners, believe the Saviour's word, Trust in his mighty name and live; A thousand joys his lips afford, His hands a thousand blessings give.

HYMN 53. C.M. (II. 152.)
Sinai and Sion. Heb. xii. 18, &c.

NOT to the terrors of the Lord,

The tempest, fire, and smoke,
Not to the thunder of that word
Which God on Sinai spoke;

But we are come to Sion's hill,
The city of our God,

Where milder words declare his will,
And spread his love abroad.

3 Behold th' innumerable host

4

Of angels clothed in light! Behold the spirits of the just, Whose faith is turn'd to sight! Behold the bless'd assembly there Whose names are writ in heaven; And God, the judge of all, declares Their vilest sins forgiven.

The saints on earth and all the dead
But one communion make;
All join in Christ their living head,
And of his grace partake.

In such society as this

My weary soul would rest;
The man that dwells where Jesus is
Must be for ever blest.

2. The Gospel, a manifestation of the Divine glory.

TH

HYMN 54. C.M. (II. 126.)

God glorified in the gospel.

HE Lord, descending from above,
Invites his children near,

While power, and truth, and boundless love,
Display their glories here.

2 Here in thy gospel's wondrous frame,
Fresh wisdom we pursue;

A thousand angels learn thy name
Beyond whate'er they knew.

3 Thy name is writ in fairest lines,
Thy wonders here we trace;

Wisdom through all the mystery shines,
And shines in Jesus' face.

4 The law its best obedience owes
To our incarnate God;

And thine avenging justice shows
Its honours in his blood.

5 But still the lustre of thy grace
Our warmer thoughts employs,
Gilds the whole scene with brighter rays,
And more exalts our joys.

God glorious, and sinners saved.

and v. 8, 9; 1 Pet. iii. 22.

Rom. i. 30,

FHow high thy wonders rise!

ATHER, how wide thy glories shine!

Known through the earth by thousand signs,
By thousand through the skies.

2 Those mighty orbs proclaim thy power,
Their motions speak thy skill,
And on the wings of every hour
We read thy patience still.

3 But when we view thy strange design
To save rebellious worms,

Our souls are fill'd with awe divine
To see what God performs.

4 When sinners break the Father's laws,
The dying Son atones;

O the dear myst'ries of his cross,
The triumph of his groans!

5 Now the full glories of the Lamb
Adorn the heavenly plains;

Bright cherubs learn Immanuel's name,
And try their choicest strains.

6 O may I bear some humble part
In that immortal song!

Wonder and joy shall tune my heart,
And love command my tongue.

3. The Gospel published and welcomed.

HYMN 56. L. M. (I. 84.) Salvation, righteousness, and strength in Christ. Isaiah, xlv. 21-25.

JEHOVAH speaks! let Israel hear;
Let all the earth rejoice and fear,
While God's eternal Son proclaims
His sovereign honours and his names.
"Ye that in shades of darkness dwell,
"Just on the verge of death and hell,
"Look up to me from distant lands,

66

'Light, life, and heaven, are in my hands.

"In me alone shall men confess

"Lies all their strength and righteousness; "But such as dare despise my name, "I'll clothe them with eternal shame."

HYMN 57. S. M. (I. 85.) Salvation, righteousness, and strength in Christ. Isaiah, xlv. 21-25.

66

THE Lord on high proclaims

His Godhead from his throne!

Mercy and justice are the names
"By which I will be known.

2 "Ye dying souls that sit

3

"In darkness and distress,

"Look from the borders of the pit
"To my recov❜ring grace."

Sinners shall hear the sound;

Their thankful tongues shall own

"Our righteousness and strength is found "In thee, the Lord, alone.'

1

In thee shall Israel trust,
And see their guilt forgiven;
God will pronounce the sinners just,
And take the saints to heaven.

HYMN 58. L. M. (I. 87.)

God dwells with the humble and penitent.
Isaiah, lvii. 15, 16.

THUS saith the high and lofty One:
"I sit upon my holy throne;

"My name is God, I dwell on high, "Dwell in my own eternity.

"But I descend to worlds below,
"On earth I have a mansion too;
The humble spirit and contrite
"Is an abode of my delight.

"The humble soul my words revive,
"I bid the mourning sinner live,
"Heal all the broken hearts I find,
"And ease the sorrows of the mind."

O may thy pard'ning grace be nigh,
Lest we should faint, despair, and die!
Thus shall our better thoughts approve
The methods of thy chast'ning love.

HYMN 59. C. M. (I. 7.)

The invitation of the gospel. Isaiah, lv. 1, 2, &c.

L

ET every mortal ear attend,
And every heart rejoice;

The trumpet of the gospel sounds
With an inviting voice.
