2 Let all your sacred passions move,
While you rehearse his deeds;
But the great work of saving love
Your highest praise exceeds.

3 All that have motion, life, and breath,
Proclaim your Maker bless'd;
Yet, when my voice expires in death,
My soul shall praise him best.

THE CHRISTIAN DOXOLOGY.

L. M.

God the Father, God the Son,
And God the Spirit, Three in One,
Be honour, praise, and glory given,
By all on earth, and all in heaven.

T

C. M.

HE God of mercy be adored, Who calls our souls from death; Who saves by his redeeming word, And new-creating breath.

2 To praise the Father and the Son,
And Spirit, all divine,

The One in Three, and Three in One,
Let saints and angels join.

THE THREE BOOKS

OF THE

HYMNS & SPIRITUAL SONGS

OF

DR. ISAAC WATTS,

ABRIDGED AND ARRANGED.

I. Hymns, acknowledging THE HOLY SCRIPTURES as the source whence that knowledge of God and of man is derived, on which divine worship is grounded.

HYMN 1. L. M. (I. 53.)

The Holy Scriptures. Heb. i. 1; 2 Tim. iii. 15, 16; Psalm cxlvii. 19, 20.

GOD, who in various methods told

His mind and will to saints of old,
Sent his own Son, with truth and grace,
To teach us in these latter days.

2 Our nation reads the written word,
That book of life, that sure record:
The bright inheritance of heaven
Is by the sweet conveyance given.

3 God's kindest thoughts are here express'd
Able to make us wise and bless'd;
The doctrines are divinely true,
Fit for reproof and comfort too.

4 Ye British isles, who read his love
In long epistles from above,

(He hath not sent his sacred word
To every land ;) praise ye the Lord.

HYMN 2. S. M. (II. 120.)

The law and gospel joined in Scripture.
Lord declares his will,
And keeps the world in awe;

THE

Amidst the smoke on Sinai's hill
Breaks out his fiery law.

The Lord reveals his face,
And smiling from above
Sends down the gospel of his grace,
Th' epistles of his love.

Hence we awake our fear,

We draw our comfort hence.
The arms of grace are treasur'd here,
And armour of defence.

We read the heavenly word,
We take the offer'd grace,
Obey the statutes of the Lord,
And trust his promises.

HYMN 3. L. M. (II. 151.)

Prophecy and inspiration.

WAS by an order from the Lord

'TW

The ancient prophets spoke his word;

His Spirit did their tongues inspire,

And warm'd their hearts with heavenly fire

2 The works and wonders which they wrought
Confirm'd the messages they brought;
The prophet's pen succeeds his breath
To save the holy words from death.

3 Great God, mine eyes with pleasure look
On the dear volume of thy book;
There my Redeemer's face I see,
And read his name who died for me.
4 Let the false raptures of my mind
Be lost, and vanish in the wind;
Here I can fix my hope secure;
This is thy word, and must endure.

HYMN 4. C. M. (II. 119.)
The holy Scriptures.

LADEN with guilt, and full of fears,
I fly to thee, my Lord,
And not a glimpse of hope appears
But in thy written word.
2 The volume of my Father's grace
Does all my griefs assuage;
Here I behold my Saviour's face
Almost in every page.

3 [This is the field where hidden lies
The pearl of price unknown;
That merchant is divinely wise
Who makes the pearl his own.
4 Here consecrated water flows
To quench my thirst of sin;
Here the fair tree of knowledge grows,
Nor danger dwells therein.]

5 This is the Judge that ends the strife
Where wit and reason fail,
My guide to everlasting life
Through all this gloomy vale.
6 O may thy counsels, mighty God,
My roving feet command;
Nor I forsake the happy road
That leads to thy right hand

II. Hymns declaratory of THE CHARACTER, CONDITION, AND PROSPECTS OF MANKIND, as evincing the need of divine interposition.

HYMN 5. C. M. (II. 159.)

An unconverted state; or, converting grace.

GREAT King of glory and of grace,

We own with humble shame,

How vile is our degenerate race,
And our first father's name.

Daily we break thy holy laws,
And then reject thy grace;
Engag'd in the old serpent's cause
Against our Maker's face.

We live estrang'd afar from God,
And love the distance well;
With haste we run the dangerous road
That leads to death and hell.

And can such rebels be restor❜d!
Such natures made divine!
Let sinners see thy glory, Lord,
And feel this power of thine.

HYMN 6. C. M. (I. 57)

Original sin. Rom. v. 12, &c.; Psalm, li. 5;
Job, xiv. 4.

BACKWARD with humble shame we

On our original;

How is our nature dash'd and broke

In our first father's fall!
