The compiler of the following pages cannot allow them to go forth without stating the large obligation he has been under to the admirably descriptive sketch of Mr. Wordsworth, and the elaborate Guide Books published by Green. It has been his object —how far accomplished or left undone-to combine the advantages of both, by avoiding the minute detail of the artist, and amplifying the slight poetical touches of the author of " The Excursion.Without making, therefore, any exaggerated pretences, it is hoped that the compiler's aim has been effected, so far as to present a work which shall be found free from any gross mistakes, and sufficiently accurate to answer all the purposes required. Clear and distinct Maps have been added, embracing every object of interest described in these pages. From the transient nature of such publications, no one can object to the addition of another to the surprisingly small number of works which illustrate a district teeming with prospects characterised by beauty, grandeur, and sublimity.
