though he adds that,

"it would be

thought too great a strictness, in this lukewarm age, to enjoin the like frequency," he speaks of the reasonableness of imitating the example, and supplies a number of collects for par. ticular graces, which may be used by those who can make up these times of devotion.

The system forms a most conspicuous part of Law's Serious Call," who, after speaking of early morning prayer, proceeds regularly through the third, sixth, and ninth hours, till he comes to evening prayer; and suggests at each some special Christian virtue, as the subject of our devotions. He does not furnish direct forms, but recommends, what is so prominent a portion of this collection, the constant use of the Psalms.

not only for morning and evening, but for noon and afternoon; and the admirable selection of Hele is an "Office of daily devotion, for morning and evening, for noon and afternoon," besides special psalms for bed-time. All these may be regarded as SO many incidental testimonies to the benefit of such a system, and to the sense of our need of it.

We have a still more striking testimony, and one which is the more interesting, as connecting these forms with that great master of practical piety, Bishop Wilson. Dr. Richard Sherlock, in his "Practical Christian," has services for all the seven hours, which he introduces as observed by the Church of God both under the Law, called Hours of the Temple, and under the Gospel, called the Canonical "Tis not hereby," he says, b

Hours."

"intended to impose upon any persons either at what hours they shall pray precisely in their closets, or that they should thus or thus punctually meditate or pray, at all such times, and upon every such subject prefixed: but 1. To put all good Christians in mind of those hours of prayer which the church and people of God, and many thousands in all parts of Christendom do still observe as such; and which, therefore, are the most fitting and seasonable times wherein make our religious addresses to heaven, if we desire to be true members of the holy Catholic Church, and to practise the Communion of Saints, and to reap the fruits of those fundamental doctrines of the Christian faith. 2. That they may be helps of devotion to the more weak and imperfectly religious, and

seasonable hints to them to raise up their souls to converse with heaven, at all times and on all occasions. And 3. To recal, if possible, the devotions of the present times to the ancient and sure way of religious exercise, which was, and is still, by all sound and orthodox religious, in the devout use of the Psalms of David."

A better sketch of the use and value of such a book as the present cannot be conceived, and it will be appreciated duly by all those who may be acquainted with the book from which it is extracted, and which is admirably calculated to teach us how to hallow every time and place. Sherlock was the uncle of Bishop Wilson, who was trained in early life partly under his roof; and who, in an advertisement which he wrote for the last edition of the "Practical Chris

tian," anticipates the benefit that the reprint would be, "from the testimony of those who know the advantage of observing the stated hours of prayer."

In the same anticipation and hope this Eleventh edition of Cosin's Devotions is published, and in the belief that it will be acceptable to the Church of England, as connected with the memory of that King who was martyred in her cause, and as having been first sent forth in that time of trouble and rebuke when it could be best felt and valued; and that it may yet again, in evil days,

"Teach her to know and love her hour of prayer,

And evermore, as faith grows rare,
Unlock her heart and offer all its store,
In holier love and humbler vows,
As suits a lost returning spouse."
