PREFACE.

THE following lecture was one of a series delivered at the "General Assembly's Institution" in Calcutta in 1859, (on the suggestion of the Bishop of Calcutta,) for the benefit of the educated natives of the metropolis. The lectures were well received, the attendance varying on different evenings from about 400 to 600. The other subjects treated of were:

Ancient India, by M. WYLIE, Esq.;

Manu and his Institutions, by the Rev. DR. DUFF; The Emperor Julian, by E. B. COWELL, Esq.; Dr. Arnold, by the Right Rev. the BISHOP OF CALCUTTA.

Some of the lectures were afterwards printed in the Calcutta Christian Observer. A few extra copies of the lecture on St. Augustine having been struck off and circulated, many requests were received from various quarters for additional copies. It is now therefore reprinted ;with the addition of a few short foot-notes, but with no change in the text.
