MISSIONS, AND SPREAD OF THE GOSPEL.

213 (529).

JESUS receive journeys run;

ESUS shall reign where'er the sun

I. M.

His kingdom stretch from shore to shore,
Till moons shall wax and wane no more.

2 People and realms of ev'ry tongue
Dwell on His love with grateful song;
And with united hearts proclaim
That grace and truth by Jesus came.

3 Blessings abound where'er He reigns:
The pris'ner leaps to loose his chains,
The weary find eternal rest,

And all the sons of want are blest.

4 Where He displays His healing power,
The sting of death is known no more:
In Him the sons of Adam boast
More blessings than their father lost.

214.

Let it echo o'er the sea:
Now is come the promised hour;
Jesus reigns with sov'reign power.

2 All ye nations, join and sing,

[ocr errors]

Christ, of lords and kings, is King!
Let it sound from shore to shore,
"Jesus reigns for evermore!"

3 Now the desert lands rejoice, And the islands join their voice; Joy! the whole creation sings, "Jesus is the King of kings!" 215 (530).

ARK! the song of jubilee,

Or the fulness of the sea

When it breaks upon the shore:
Hallelujah! for the Lord

God Omnipotent shall reign;
Hallelujah! let the word

Echo round the earth and main!

2 Hallelujah! hark! the sound,
From the depth unto the skies,
Wakes above, beneath, around,
All creation's harmonies:
See Jehovah's banner furled,

78.

Sheathed His sword; He speaks - 't is done; And the kingdoms of this world

Are the kingdoms of His Son.

3 He shall reign from pole to pole
With illimitable sway;

He shall reign when, like a scroll,
Yonder heavens have pass'd away:
Then the end- -beneath His rod

--

Man's last enemy shall fall;
Hallelujah! Christ is God,

God in Christ is all in all.

216 (536).

LORD, send Thy word, and let it fly,

Arm'd with Thy Spirit's power;

Ten thousand shall confess its sway,
And bless the saving hour.

2 Beneath the influence of Thy grace,
The barren wastes shall rise,

With verdure and with fruits array'd,
A blooming paradise.

3 True holiness shall strike its root
In each regen'rate heart;
Shall in a growth divine arise,
And heavenly fruits impart.

4 Peace, with her olives crown'd, shall stretch Her wings from shore to shore;

No trump shall rouse the rage of war,
Nor murd'rous cannon roar.

5 Lord, for those days we wait- those days
Are in Thy word foretold;

Fly swifter, sun and stars, and bring
This promised age of gold!

217 (545).

What its signs of promise are.
Trav'ler! o'er yon mountain's height
See the glory-beaming star!
Watchman! does its beauteous ray
Aught of joy or hope foretell?
Trav'ler! yes; it brings the day,
Promised day of Israel..

2 Watchman! tell us of the night:
Higher yet that star ascends.
Trav'ler! blessedness and light,

Peace and truth its course portends.
Watchman! will its beams alone
Gild the spot that gave them birth?
Trav'ler! ages are its own;

See! it bursts o'er all the earth!

7s.

3 Watchman! tell us of the night,
For the morning seems to dawn.
Trav'ler! darkness takes its flight;
Doubt and terror are withdrawn.
Watchman! let thy wand'rings cease;
Hie thee to thy quiet home.
Trav'ler! lo! the Prince of Peace,
Lo! the Son of God is come!

218 (881).

[ocr errors]

LORD our God! arise;

The cause of truth maintain;
And wide all o'er the peopled world
Extend her blesséd reign.

2 Thou Prince of life! arise,
Nor let Thy glory cease;

S. M.

Far spread the conquests of Thy grace,
And bless the earth with peace.

3 O Holy Spirit! rise,

Expand Thy heavenly wing,

And o'er a dark and ruin'd world

Let light and order spring.

4 Oh, all ye nations! rise,

To God the Saviour sing;

From shore to shore, from earth to heaven,
Let echoing anthems ring.

219 (527).

PITY

Constrain the earth to come;

the nations, O our God!

Send Thy victorious word abroad,
And bring the strangers home.

C. M.

2 We long to see Thy churches full, That all Thy faithful race

May, with one voice and heart and soul,
Sing Thy redeeming grace.

220.

ASTEN, Lord, the glorious time,

Ev'ry nation, ev'ry clime,

Shall the gospel call obey.

2 Mightiest kings His power shall own,
Heathen tribes His name adore;
Satan and his host, o'erthrown,

Bound in chains, shall hurt no more.
3 Then shall war and tumult cease,
Then be banish'd grief and pain;
Righteousness and joy and peace
Undisturb'd shall ever reign.

4 Bless we, then, our gracious Lord,
Ever praise His glorious Name;
All His mighty acts record,

All His wondrous love proclaim.

221 (537).

ROM Greenland's icy mountains,
From India's coral strand,

Where Afric's sunny fountains
Roll down their golden sand-
From many an ancient river,
From many a palmy plain,
They call us to deliver

Their land from error's chain.
