3 Thus, o'er empty pitchers mourning,
'Mid the desart of the world;
We, with shame and anguish burning,
From our cherished joys are hurled.

4 Christ, the mists of sin dispelling,
Streams of living water shews;
In his presence ever dwelling,
Bids us find our true repose.

5 Future prospects rich in blessing
Open to our views secure :
Sure of endless joys possessing;
Of a heavenly kingdom sure.

Invitations of mercy.

(MAT. XI. 28.)

OME, said Jesus' sacred voice;

[ocr errors]

Come, and make my paths your choice;

I will guide you to. your home;

Weary pilgrim, hither come !

2 Thou who, houseless, sole, forlorn,
Long hast borne the proud world's scorn,
Long hast roamed the barren waste,
Weary pilgrim, hither haste!

3 Ye who, tost on beds of pain,
Seek for ease, but seek in vain :
Ye, whose swoln and sleepless eyes,
Watch to see the morning rise !

4 Ye, by fiercer anguish torn,
In remorse for guilt who mourn!

Here repose your heavy care:
Who the sting of guilt can bear?

5 Sinner, come! for here is found
Balm that flows for every wound!
Peace that ever shall endure ;
Rest eternal, sacred, sure.

The grace of God extended to all mankind,

(2 PETER III. 8, 9.)

HOUGH now, ye just, the time appears

TProtracted, dark, unknown,

An hour, a day, a thousand years

To heaven's great Lord are one.

2 Still all may share his sovereign grace,
In every change secure :

The meek, the suppliant, contrite race
Shall find his mercy sure.

3 The contrite race he counts his friends,
Forbids the suppliant's fall;

1

Condemns reluctant, but extends
The hope of grace to all.

The grace of God extended to all mankind.

(LUKE XIII. 28-30.)

HENCE be the narrow mind, that views

The savage with disdain !

Hence be the arrogance, that dares
To limit Mercy's reign!

2 For ever open are thy doors,
Thou city of our God!

By every people, kindred, tongue,
Shall thy large courts be trod.

3 While guilty Christians shuddering see
The gates of Mercy close,

There shall the children of the South,
With Abraham's sons repose.

4 To them may simple Nature prove
A safe, though feeble ray;
While sinners suffer by the laws
They dared to disobey.

GREAT GOD! and shall thy promised, grace

Extend through all creation?

And wilt thou shew thy glorious face
To every tribe and nation?
Shall all the wide-extended isles
Enjoy the sunshine of thy smiles,
And pay Thee adoration?

2 Yes, in thy changeless word we see
The prize to all awarded;
Gentile and Jew, and bond and free,
Shall find their names recorded!
Earth's furthest sons.-the East, the West,
Like Abraham's seed shall sink to rest

With heavenly joys rewarded!

"Ye are the salt of the earth.”

(MAT. V. 13.)

ALT of the earth, ye virtuous few,
Who season human kind;

Light of the world, whose cheering ray
Illumes the realms of mind!

2 Where Misery spreads her deepest shade,
Your strong compassion glows;
From your blest lips the balm distils,
That softens mortal woes.

3 By dying beds, in prison glooms,
Your frequent steps are found;
Angels of love! you hover near,
To bind the stranger's wound.

4 You wash with tears the bloody page, Which human crimes deform;

When vengeance threats, your prayers ascend, And break the gathering storm.

5 In every faith, through every clime,
Your pilgrim steps we trace;

And shrines are drest, and temples rise,
Each hallowed spot to grace.

6 Proceed! Your race of glory run!
Your virtuous toils endure!

The active Christian.

(LUKE XII. 35–38;)

YE servants of the Lord,

Each in his office wait,

Observant of his heavenly word,
And watchful at his gate.

Let all your lamps be bright,
And trim the golden flame,

Gird up your loins, as in his sight,'
For aweful is his name,

Watch,-'tis your Lord's command;
And while we speak, he's near:
Mark the first signal of his hand,
And ready all appear.

O happy servant he,

In such a posture

found!

He shall his Lord with rapture see,

And be with honour crowned.
