4 Son of God, my dearest Lord,
All my crown and my. reward:
Thou who freely diedst for me,
Shalt alone my bridegroom be.

479. Jesus Christ the only Way to God.

1

(L. M.)

JESUS, my all, to heaven is gone,

He whom I fix my hopes upon;
His track I see, and I'll pursue
The narrow way till him I view.

2 The way the holy prophets went,
The road that leads from banishment,
The King's highway of holiness,
I'll go, for all his paths are peace.
3 This is the way I long have sought,
And mourn'd because I found it not;
My grief, my burden, long has been,
Because I could not cease from sin.
4 The more I strove against its power,
I sinn'd and stumbled but the more;
Till late I heard my Saviour say,
"Come hither, soul, I am the way."

5 Lo, glad I come, and thou, blest Lamb,
Shalt take me to thee as I am;
My sinful self to thee I give,
Nothing but love shall I receive.

6 Then will I tell to sinners round,
What a dear Saviour I have found;
I'll point to thy redeeming blood,
And say, "Behold the way to God !".

The Saviour's Name. (L. M.)

[ocr errors]

ESUS! that sweet, that charming name,
Sets all my languid pow'rs on flame;
While virgin-souls, who feel its pow'r,
Cannot but love him and adore,

2 This name shall be my only trust,
Of which the brightest seraphs boast;
That heals the wounded, cheers the faint,
And consolates the dying saint.

3 This dear unchanging name's my prop,
The life of my expiring hope;

My sovereign balm for every grief,
In all distress a sure relief.

4 This pow'rful name, by faith apply'd,
Makes ev'ry guilty fear subside;
And yields my soul a cheering light,
'Midst darkest shades of gloomy night.
5 When I this sweet, this lovely name,
With all that it imports can claim ;
My faith is strong, my hopes increase,
My heart o'erflows with joy and peace.
6 No foes nor trouble do I fear,
For Christ, my all in all, is near;
Whose name to know, and person love,
Is peace, and joy, and heav'n above.

PRAISE TO CHRIST.

481. Hosanna to Christ. Matt. xxi. 9. (C. M.)

1

HOSANNA to the Royal Son,

Of David's ancient line,

His natures two, his person one,
Mysterious and divine.

2 The root of David here we find,
And offspring is the same;
Eternity and time are join'd,
In our Immanuel's name.

3 Bless'd he that comes to wretched men,
With peaceful news from heav'n;
Hosannas of the highest strain

To Christ the Lord be given.

4 Let mortals ne'er refuse to take
Th' hosanna on their tongues,

Lest rocks and stones should rise, and break
Their silence into songs.

482. Christ worshipped by all. Rev. v. 11. (C.M.)

1 COME
OME let us join our cheerful songs

With angels round the throne;""

Ten thousand thousand are their tongues,
But all their joys are one.

.

2 "Worthy the Lamb that dy'd," they cry,
"To be exalted thus:

"Worthy the Lamb," our lips reply,
For he was slain for us."

3 Jesus is worthy to receive
Honour and power divine;
And blessings more than we can give,
Be, Lord, for ever thine.

4 Let all that dwell above the sky,
And air, and earth, and seas,
Conspire to lift thy glories high,
And speak thine endless praise.
5 The whole creation join in one
To bless the sacred name,
Of him that sits upon the throne,
And to adore the Lamb.

483.

Christ's Exaltation. (L. M.)

1 WHAT

WHAT equal honours shall we bring
To thee, O Lord, our God, the Lamb?

When all the notes that angels sing,
Are far inferior to thy name?

2 Worthy is he that once was slain,

The Prince of Peace, that groan'd and dy'd, Worthy to rise, and live, and reign

At his Almighty Father's side.

3 Power and dominion are his due,

Who stood condemn'd at Pilate's bar:

Wisdom belongs to Jesus too,

Though he was charg'd with madness here.

4 All riches are his native right,
Yet he sustain❜d amazing loss:
To him ascribe eternal might,
Who left his weakness on the cross.

5 Honour immortal must be paid,
Instead of scandal and of scorn:
While glory shines around his head,
And a bright crown without a thorn.
6 Blessings for ever on the Lamb,
Who bore the curse for wretched men :
Let angels sound his sacred name,
And every creature say, Amen.

Praise to the Redeemer. (C. M.)

PLUNG

LUNG'D in a gulph of dark despair,
We wretched sinners lay,

Without one cheerful beam of hope,
Or spark of glimmering day.

2 With pitying eyes, the Prince of Grace
Beheld our helpless grief;

He saw, and (O amazing love!)

He ran to our relief.

3 Down from the shining seats above,
With joyful haste he fled,
Enter'd the grave in mortal flesh,
And dwelt among the dead.

4 O for this love, let rocks and hills.
Their lasting silence break,
And all harmonious human tongues,
The Saviour's praises speak.

5 Angels, assist our mighty joys,
Strike all your harps of gold;

But when you raise your highest notes,
His love can ne’er be told.
