6 Lord, we are few, but thou art near;
Nor short thine arm, nor deaf thine ear;
Oh rend the heav'ns, come quickly down,
And make a thousand hearts thine own!

65.

1

The same. (L. M.)

WHERE two or three with sweet accord

Obedient to their sov'reign Lord,

Meet to recount his acts of grace, And offer solemn pray'r and praise : 2 "There, (says the Saviour,) will I be, "Amid this little company;

"To them unveil my smiling face; "And shed my glories round the place.” 3 We meet at thy command, dear Lord, Relying on thy faithful word;

66.

Now send thy Spirit from above,
And fill our hearts with heav'nly love.

The same. (L. M.)

KINDRED in Christ, for his dear sake,

A hearty welcome here receive;

May we together now partake
The joys which only he can give.

2 To you and me by grace 'tis giv'n
To know the Saviour's precious name;
And shortly we shall meet in heav'n,
Our hope, our way, our end the same.
3 May he, by whose kind care we meet,
Send his good Spirit from above,
Make our communication sweet,

And cause our hearts to burn with love.

4 Forgotten be each worldly theme,
When Christians meet together thus ;
We only wish to speak of him,
Who liv'd, and dy'd, and reigns for us.

5 We'll talk of all he did, and said,
And suffer'd for us here below;
The path he mark'd for us to tread,
And what he's doing for us now.

6 Thus, as the moments pass away,
We'll love, and wonder, and adore;
And hasten on the glorious day,
When we shall meet to part no more.

BAPTISM.

67. Baptism. Matt. xxviii. 19. Acts ii. 38.' (L. M.)

WAS the commission of our Lord,

1'TW

"Go, teach the nations, and baptize;"

The nations have receiv'd the word

Since he ascended to the skies.

2 He sits upon th' eternal hills,

With grace and pardon in his hands,
And sends his cov'nant with the seals,
To bless the distant British lands.

3" Repent, and be baptiz'd, (he saith,) "For the remission of your sins;" And thus our sense assists our faith, And shows us what his gospel means.

F

4 Our souls he washes in his blood,
As water makes the body clean;
And the good Spirit from our God
Descends like purifying rain.
5 Then we engage ourselves to thee,
And seal our cov'nant with the Lord;
O may the great Eternal Three,

In heav'n our solemn vows record!

68. Children devoted to God in Baptism. Gen. xvii. 7. Acts xvi. 14, 15, 33. (L. M.)

1 THUS saith the mercy of the Lord, "I'll be a God to thee;

THU

"I'll bless thy num'rous race, and they
Shall be a seed for me."

[ocr errors]

2 Abra'm believ'd the promis'd grace,
And gave his son to God;
But water seals the blessing now,
That once was seal'd with blood,
8 Thus Lydia sanctify'd her house,
When she receiv'd the word;
Thus the believing jailor gave
His household to the Lord.
4 Thus later saints, Eternal King!
Thine ancient truth embrace;
To thee their infant offspring bring,
And humbly claim thy grace.

69. Circumcision and Infant Baptism. (C. Mr)

1 THUS did the sons of Abra'm pass
THUS

Under the bloody seal of grace;
The young disciples bore the yoke,
Till Christ the painful bondage broke.

2 By milder ways doth Jesus prove
His Father's covenant, and his love;
He seals to saints his glorious grace,
And not forbids their infant race.

3 Their seed is sprinkled with his blood;
Their children set apart for God;
His Spirit on their offspring shed,
Like water pour'd upon the head.
4 Let ev'ry saint, with cheerful voice,
In this large covenant rejoice;
Young children, in their early days,
Shall give the God of Abra'm praise.

70. Faith assisted by Sense, or Preaching, Baptism, and the Lord's Supper. (C. M.)

1

M

Y Saviour God, my sov'reign Prince,
Reigns far above the skies!

And brings his graces down to sense,
And helps my faith to rise.

2 My eyes and ears shall bless his name,
They read and hear his word :
My touch and taste shall do the same,
When they receive the Lord.

3 Baptismal water is design'd

To seal his cleansing grace,
While at his feast of bread and wine
He gives his saints a place.

4 But not the waters of a flood
Can make my flesh so clean,
As by his Spirit and his blood
He'll wash my soul from sin.

5 Not choicest meats, or noblest wines,
So much my heart refresh,

As when my faith goes thro' the signs,
And feeds upon his flesh.

6 I love the Lord, who stoops so low,
To give his word a seal:

71.

1

But the rich grace his hands bestow,
Exceeds the figures still.

Infant Baptism. (S. M.)

Gre bless our

REAT God, now condescend
To bless our rising race;

Soon may their willing spirits bend,
The subjects of thy grace.

20 what a vast delight

Their happiness to see!
Our warmest wishes all unite
To lead their souls to thee.

3 Now bless, thou God of love,
This ordinance divine;

72.

1

Send thy good Spirit from above,
And make these children* thine.

COME

The same. (L. M.)

YOME, Holy Ghost, descend from high;
Baptizer of our spirits thou!

The sacramental seal apply,

And witness with the water now.

*Or, this infant.
