3 Look down, O God, with pitying eye, And view the desolation round;

See what wide realms in darkness lie, And hurl their idols to the ground. 4 Loud let the gospel-trumpet blow, And call the nations from afar; Let all the isles their Saviour know, And earth's remotest ends draw near. 5 On all our souls let grace descend, Like heavenly dew, or copious showers, That we may call our God our friend, That we may hail salvation ours.

181. Prayer for Missionaries. (C. M.)

1 GREAT God, the nations of the earth,

Are by creation thine;

And in thy works, by all beheld,
Thy radiant glories shine.

2 But, Lord, thy greater love hath sent
Thy gospel to mankind,
Unveiling what rich stores of grace
Are treasur'd in thy mind.

3 0 when shall these glad tidings spread,
The spacious earth around,
Till every tribe, and every soul,

Shall hear the joyful sound!

4 Smile, Lord, on each renew'd attempt, To spread the gospel's rays;

And build on sin's demolish'd throne,
The temples of thy praise.

Missionary Success, (P.M.)

SEE

EE how great a flame aspires,
Kindled by a spark of grace!
Jesu's love the nations fires,
Sets the kingdoms on a blaze:
To bring fire on earth he came;
Kindled in some hearts it is;
O that all might catch the flame,
All partake the glorious bliss!
2 When he first the work begun,
Small and feeble was his day;
Now the word doth swiftly run,
Now it wins its widening way;
More and more it spreads and grows,
Ever mighty to prevail;

Sin's strong holds it now o'erthrows,
Shakes the trembling gates of hell.
3 Sons of God, your Saviour praise,
He the door hath open'd wide;
He hath given the word of grace,
Jesu's word is glorified :

Jesus, mighty to redeem,

He alone the work hath wrought,
Worthy is the work of Him,

Him who spake a world from nought.

4 Saw ye not the cloud arise,
Little as a human hand?

Now it spreads along the skies,
Hangs o'er all the thirsty land:
Lo! the promise of a shower,
Drops already from above;
But the Lord shall shortly pour,
All the spirit of his love.

Prayer for the Jews. (L. M.)
LMIGHTY God! display thy grace,
Its beams effuse on Jacob's race;
Loose from their chains the captive band,
Restore them to their native land.

2 O God of Abr'am, hear our prayer,
Grant them again thy love to share ;
Their mis'ry, let thy mercy heal;
Their trespass hide, their pardon seal.
3 How long shall Jacob's offspring prove,
The sad suspension of thy love?

Say, shall thy wrath perpetual burn?
And wilt thou, ne'er appeas'd, return?
4 No longer, God of love, delay
Thy wonted mercy to display;
But let thy all-disposing will,
Thy people's stedfast hope fulfil.

5 Thy quick'ning Spirit now impart;
And wake to mirth each grateful heart;
While Israel's rescu'd tribes in Thee,
Their bliss and full salvation see.

(C. M.)

EHOLD! the mountain of the Lord,
In latter days shall rise

Above the mountains and the hills,
And draw the wondering eyes.
2 To this, the joyful nations round,
All tribes and tongues shall flow;
Up to the hill of God," they'll say,
And to his house we'll go."

3 The beam that shines on Zion's hill,
Shall lighten every land;

The King who reigns in Zion's towers,
Shall all the world command.

4 No strife shall vex Messiah's reign,
Or mar the peaceful years;

To plough-shares soon they beat their swords,
To pruning-hooks their spears.

5 No longer hosts encountering hosts,
Their millions slain deplore;
They hang the trumpet in the hall,
And study war no more.

6 Come then,-O come, from every land,
To worship at his shrine:
And walking in the light of God,
With holy beauties shine.

185. How beautiful upon the Mountains are the Feet of him who bringeth good Tidings. (P. M.)

ON

N the mountain's top appearing,
Lo the sacred herald stands;

Welcome news to Zion bearing,
Zion long in hostile lands:
Mourning captive!

God himself will loose thy hands.

2 Has thy night been long and mournful?
All thy friends unfaithful prov'd?
Have thy foes been proud and scornful,
By thy sighs and tears unmov'd?
Cease thy mourning,

Zion still is well belov'd.

3 God, thy God, will now restore thee!
He himself appears thy friend:
All thy foes shall flee before thee;
Here their boasts and triumphs end:
Great deliverance,

Zion's King vouchsafes to send.

4 Enemies no more shall trouble,
All thy warfare now is past,
For thy shame thou shalt have double,
Days of peace are come at last;
All thy conflicts,

End in everlasting rest.

186. For Missionary Prayer Meetings. (L.M.)

ORD, in thy churches now appear,

With great success our prospects cheer!
May we thy presence with us feel!

2 Since thou hast rescu'd us from death,
To know thy love, and taste thy grace;
O let us spend our life and breath,
In winning sinners to thy ways.

3 Shall we be cold, and live supine?
While thousands perish all around !
Duty is ours,-success is thine,
Now let thy power with us be found.

4 Bless those who now, in distant lands,
Are preaching Christ, as All in All!
Put forth thy pow'r,-break Satan's bands,-
Crown with success the gospel call.
