5 O when I take the pledge of love
Which Thou Thyself hast given
Lord Jesus plead my cause above,
Remember me in heaven.

[blocks in formation]

1 Death lifts his awful voice on high,
Earth trembles at the sound;
"All, all is mine beneath the sky,
My empire knows no bound.
I strike and monarchs bowing down
Beneath my sceptre fall,"

The dead around responding own
"Death, death is Lord of all !"

2 Ye careless mortals, hear the cry-
'Death, death is Lord of all !"
Your bodies soon in dust will lie,
But where the guilty soul?
Deep, deep in dungeon of despair,
In Satan's dark abode-
Tremble ye sinners, and prepare,
Prepare to meet your God!

3 All joy to the believer then,
When his last hour draws nigh!
Death is his everlasting gain,
He trembles not to die.

*

No fear of hell his spirit stings,
No guilty pangs dismay;

From death triumphantly he springs,
And speeds to heaven his way.

FUNERAL. (Passing Bell.)

1 Oft as the bell with solemn toll
Speaks the departure of a soul,
Let each one ask himself, am I
Prepared should I be called to die?

2 Only this frail and fleeting breath Preserves me from the jaws of death: Soon as it fails, at once I'm gone And plunged into a world unknown.

3 Lord Jesus! help me now to flee
And seek my hope alone in Thee;
Apply thy blood, thy Spirit give,
Subdue my sin, and make me live.

4 Then when the solemn bell I hear,
If saved from guilt, I need not fear;
Nor would the thought distressing be,
Perhaps it next may toll for me.

68. TO BE SUNG OVER THE GRAVE OF

A BELIEVER.

1 Fare thee well! beloved companion,
All thy earthly cares are fled;
Death proclaims his dark dominion,
And the grave is now thy bed.

CHORUS.

Fare thee well beloved companion,
All thy earthly cares are fled.

2 Thou hast shared thy God's compassion,
Thou hast known a Saviour's worth;
Jesu's love and intercession

Were thy stay and song on earth.

3 Not on earth alone are voices
Raised to Jesus, Lord of all,
Not on earth alone rejoices
The believer's pardoned soul.

4 Heaven invites the ransomed spirit,
God in cloudless light to see :
And with angels to inherit

Joy, and love, and liberty.

5 Heaven admits the blessed believer Into bliss unseen, unknown; There to praise our God for ever;

And the Lamb upon the throne.

DEATH. (Eden.)

1 How soon will the light of our morning be fled, And sunk in eternity's wave!

How soon shall we sleep 'midst the numberless dead,

And darkness and silence around us be spread, The curtains of night, and the grave!

2 How hope we the day of God's wrath to abide ? Is human obedience our stay?

Death laughs at our efforts his sting to avoid, Hell glories to see us thus blinded by pride, And Satan exults o'er his prey.

One heaven-born hope will the christian uphold,

Before the tribunal of God;

A hope which the Spirit alone can unfold,
A claim in the deed of redemption enrolled,
And sealed by a Saviour's blood.

4 O Lord! may the sun of thy righteousness rise, And shed on the gospel à might

To soften our hearts, to illumine our eyes,
To make us aspire to the christian's prize,
And soar to the regions of light.

CONFIRMATION HYMN.

1 GOD of love, whose brightest glory
Beams in mercy from the Cross,
While we bend the knee before Thee
Let thy Spirit plead in us.

2 Hear us, Father while renewing
Our baptismal covenant :—
All our thoughts of sin subduing
In our hearts thy goodness plant.

3 Help us to renounce for ever,
Satan, and his ways of sin;
And henceforward may we never
Yield to evil thoughts within.

4 Turn our hearts from pomp and folly
In a world where snares abound;
Keep us by thy Spirit wholly

In the path where peace is found.

5 May we, Lord, be true believers,
Serving Jesus from our youth:
Make us all the blest receivers
Of thy sanctifying truth.

6 Let our pleasure be to love Thee,
Praising Thee till life shall end,
Then our happy souls shall prove Thee
Father, Counsellor, and Friend.
