PREFACE.

WHEN I first began to write, the utmost I expected to de, would be a few essays for the newspapers, or a pamphlet at most; hoping thereby to induce men of talents, of leisure, of reading, and of liberal sentiments: with which our happy and great republic so much abounds: to write on these things: our newspaper press being the most enlightened, and the only really free press in the world. in the world. Its responsibility then is great beyond conception. To use this highest of all human tribunals, for directing the public mind, and turning men's thoughts and observations to the astonishing events that are taking place, and must inevitably take place amongst the nations, in such rapid succession, that the mind can hardly keep pace with it. And when it is clear and evident, from the signs of the times, in connection with the Divine prophecies: that the order of human society throughout the world, is about to undergo,a thorough and radical change, must be obvious to even-superficial observers. It is passing strange to see so little said upon these all important occurrence, instead of enlightening mankind, in these things, to see any writer on our side of the Atlantic, giving a wrong direction to discussions of this kind, either from party predelictions, or sectarian prejudices, or let the motives be what they may, the consequences are pernicious; and the mind that is honestly in search of truth, is dissatisfied and disappointed. And we see even theological writers, from these same reasons, or by too closely treading in the steps of former writers, have given a bias and coloring to every thing they have touched, which has only darkened counsel by words with out knowledge.

The almost universal inattention and apathy of the world of mankind to these most interesting topics, is to me at least, a plain proof of the truth of the prophecy of him who is emphatically TRUTH itself. Matt. xxiv. 44. Therefore be ye also ready for in such an hour as ye think not, the Son of man cometh. And as to the signs of the times, we have the same unerring truth to warn us. Verse 32.Now learn a parable of the fig-tree; When his branch is yet tender, and putteth forth leaves, ye know that summer is nigh. And in the 12th chapter of Luke 40th verse-Be ye therefore ready also: for the
