[blocks in formation]

1. BEHOLD the day is come;

The righteous Judge is near;
And sinners, trembling at their doom,
Shall soon their sentence hear.

2. Angels, in bright attire,

Conduct Him through the skies;
Darkness and tempest, smoke and fire,
Attend Him as He flies.

3. How awful is the sight!

How loud the thunders roar!
The sun forbears to give his light,
And stars are seen no more.

4. The whole creation groans;
But saints arise and sing:

They are the ransomed of the Lord,
And He their God and King.

[blocks in formation]

1. O WHERE shall rest be found

Rest for the weary soul?

"T were vain the ocean depths to sound,
Or pierce to either pole.

2. The world can never give

The bliss for which we sigh:
'Tis not the whole of life to live,
Nor all of death to die.

3. Beyond this vale of tears
There is a life above,
Unmeasured by the flight of years;
And all that life is love.

4. There is a death whose pang
Outlasts the fleeting breath:

O what eternal horrors hang
Around the second death!

BEDDOME.

345.

5. Lord God of truth and grace,
Teach us that death to shun,
Lest we be banished from Thy face,
And evermore undone.

S. M.

1. THOU Judge of quick and dead,
Before whose bar severe,
With holy joy, or guilty dread,
We all shall soon appear.

2. Our cautioned souls prepare
For that tremendous day;
O, fill us now with watchful care,
And stir us up to pray.

3. To damp our earthly joys,
To wake our gracious fears,
Forever let th' archangel's voice
Be sounding in our ears.
4. The solemn, midnight cry-

MONTGOMERY.

"Ye dead, the Judge is come! Arise, and meet Him in the sky,

And meet your instant doom!"
5. O may we thus be found,
Obedient to Thy word;

Attentive to the trumpet's sound,
And looking for our Lord!

6. O may we thus insure

346.

Our lot among the blest;

And watch a moment to secure
An everlasting rest.

C. WESLEY.

1. Rock of Ages, cleft for me,
Let me hide myself in Thee!
Let the water and the blood
From Thy riven side which flowed,
Be of sin the double cure,

Cleanse me from its guilt and power.

2. Not the labors of my hands

Can fulfill Thy law's demands:
Could my zeal no respite know,
Could my tears forever flow,
All for sin could not atone;
Thou must save, and Thou alone!

3. Nothing in my hand I bring;
Simply to Thy cross I cling;
Naked, come to Thee for dress;
Helpless, look to Thee for
grace;
Foul, I to Thy fountain fly;
Wash me, Saviour, or I die!
4. While I draw this fleeting breath,
When my eyelids close in death,
When I soar to worlds unknown,
See Thee on Thy judgment-throne,.
Rock of Ages, cleft for me,
Let me hide myself in Thee.

1. Go to dark Gethsemane,

TOPLADY.

Ye that feel the tempter's power,
Your Redeemer's conflict see,
Watch with Him one bitter hour;
Turn not from His griefs away,
Learn of Jesus Christ to pray.
2. Follow to the judgment-hall;

View the Lord of life arraigned;
O the wormwood and the gall!
O the pangs His soul sustained!
Shun not suffering, shame, or loss;
Learn of Him to bear the cross.

3. Calvary's mournful mountain climb;
There, adoring at his feet,
Mark that miracle of time,

God's own sacrifice complete:
"It is finished"-hear him cry;
Learn of Jesus Christ to die.

4. Early hasten to the tomb,

348.

Where they laid His breathless clay;
All is solitude and gloom,

-Who hath taken Him away?
Christ is risen; He meets our eyes;
Saviour, teach us so to rise.

7s.

1. FROM the cross uplifted high,
Where the Saviour deigns to die,
What melodious sounds we hear,
Bursting on the ravished ear!-
"Love's redeeming work is done;
Come and welcome, sinner, come.

MONTGOMERY.

2. "Sprinkled now with blood the throne,
Why beneath thy burdens groan?
On My pierced body laid,
Justice owns the ransom paid;
Bow the knee, and kiss the Son;
Come and welcome, sinner, come.
3. "Spread for thee, the festal board
See with richest dainties stored;
To thy Father's bosom pressed,
Yet again a child confessed,
Never from His house to roam,
Come and welcome, sinner, come.

4. "Soon the days of life shall end;
Lo, I come, your Saviour, Friend,
Safe your spirits to convey
To the realms of endless day,
Up to My eternal home;

349.

Come and welcome, sinner, come."

7s.

1. SINNER, art thou still secure?

Wilt thou still refuse to pray?
Can thy heart or hands endure
In the Lord's avenging day?

HAWES.

See His mighty arm made bare!
Awful terrors clothe His brow!
For His judgment now prepare,

Thou must either break or bow.
2. At His presence nature shakes,

Earth affrighted hastes to flee;
Solid mountains melt like wax,
What will then become of thee?
Who His coming may abide?
You that glory in your shame,
Will you find a place to hide

When the world is wrapt in flame?
3. Then the great, the rich, the wise,
Trembling, guilty, self-condemned,
Must behold the wrathful eyes

Of the Judge they once blasphemed.
Where are now their haughty looks?
O! their horror and despair,
When they see the opened books,
And their dreadful sentence hear!
4. Lord, prepare us by Thy grace,

Soon we must resign our breath,
And our souls be called to pass
Through the iron gate of death.
Let us now our day improve,
Listen to the Gospel voice;
Seek the things that are above;
Scorn the world's pretended joys.

7s.

1. WHEN thy mortal life is fled,

NEWTON.

When the death-shades o'er thee spread.
When is finished thy career,

Sinner, where wilt thou appear ?

2. When the world has passed away,
When draws near the judgment-day,
When the awful trump shall sound,
Say, O, where wilt thou be found?

350.
