[blocks in formation]

1. LORD! where shall guilty souls retire,
Forgotten and unknown!

In hell they meet Thy dreadful fire,
In heaven Thy glorious throne.

2. Should I suppress my vital breath
To shun the wrath divine,

Thy voice would break the bars of death,
And make the grave resign.

3. If winged with beams of morning light,
I fly beyond the west,

Thy hand, which must support my flight,
Would soon betray my rest.

4. If o'er my sins I think to draw
The curtains of the night,

Those flaming eyes that guard Thy law
Would turn the shades to light.

5. The beams of noon, the midnight hour,
Are both alike to Thee:
O may
I ne'er provoke that power
From which I can not flee.

[blocks in formation]

1. GOD moves in a mysterious way
His wonders to perform;

He plants His footsteps in the sea,
And rides upon the storm.

2. Deep in unfathomable mines
Of never-failing skill,

He treasures up His vast designs,
And works His sovereign will.

3. Ye fearful saints, fresh courage take;
The clouds ye so much dread
Are big with mercy, and will break
In blessings on your head.

WATTS.

194.

4. Judge not the Lord by feeble sense,
But trust Him for His grace;
Behind a frowning providence
He hides a smiling face.

5. His purposes will ripen fast,
Unfolding every hour;

The bud may have a bitter taste,
But sweet will be the flower.

6. Blind unbelief is sure to err,
And scan His work in vain;
God is his own interpreter,
And He will make it plain.

1. O HOLY, holy, holy Lord!

COWPER.

Bright in Thy deeds and in Thy name,
Forever be Thy name adored,

Thy glories let the world proclaim!

2. O Jesus, Lamb once crucified

To take our load of sins away,
Thine be the hymn that rolls its lay
Along the realms of upper day!

3. O Holy Spirit from above,

In streams of light and glory giv'n,
Thou source of ecstasy and love,

Thy praises ring through earth and heav'n.

4. O God triune, to Thee we owe

195.

Our every thought, our every song;
And ever may Thy praises flow

From saint and seraph's burning tongue!

1. God is a name my soul adores

Th' almighty Three, th' eternal One:
Nature and grace, with all their powers,
Confess the Infinite Unknown.

2. Thy voice produced the sea and spheres; Bade the waves roar, the planets shine: But nothing like Thyself appears

Through all these spacious works of Thine. 3. Still restless nature dies and grows;

From change to change the creatures run;
Thy being no succession knows,

And all Thy vast designs are one.

4. A glance of Thine runs through the globes,
Rules the bright worlds, and moves their frame;
Broad sheets of light compose Thy robes,
Thy guards are formed of living flame.

1. COME, O Creator Spirit blest!

And in our souls take up Thy rest;
Come, with Thy grace and heavenly aid,
To fill the hearts which Thou hast made.

2. Great Paraclete! to Thee we cry;
O highest gift of God most high!
O fount of life! O fire of love!
And sweet anointing from above!

WATTS.

3. Kindle our senses from above,
And make our hearts o'erflow with love;
With patience firm, and virtue high,
The weakness of our flesh supply.

4. Far from us drive the foe we dread,
And grant us Thy true peace instead;
So shall we not, with Thee for guide,
Turn from the path of life aside.

[blocks in formation]

1. ETERNAL Spirit, we confess

LYRA CATH.

And sing the wonders of Thy grace;
Thy power conveys our blessings down
From God the Father and the Son.

2. Enlightened by Thy heavenly ray,

Our shades and darkness turn to day;
Thine inward teachings make us know
Our danger, and our refuge too.
3. Thy power and glory work within,
And break the chains of reigning sin;
Do our imperious lusts subdue,

198.

And form our wretched hearts anew.

4. The troubled conscience knows Thy voice;
Thy cheering words awake our joys;
Thy words allay the stormy wind,
And calm the surges of the mind.

Doxology. L. M.

1. LORD! when the world is at its end,
And Christ to judgment shall descend,
May we be call'd those joys to see,
Prepared from all eternity.

2. Praise to the Father, with the Son,
And Holy Spirit, Three in One;
As ever was in ages past,

And shall be so while ages last.

WATTS.

1. COME, gracious Spirit, heavenly Dove,
With light and comfort from above;
Be Thou our guardian, Thou our guide,
O'er every thought and step preside.
2. The light of truth to us display,
And make us know and choose Thy way;
Plant holy fear in every heart,
That we from God may ne'er depart.

3. Lead us to holiness, the road

That we must take to dwell with God;
Lead us to Christ, the living way,
Nor let us from His precepts stray.

199.

4. Lead us to God, our final rest,
In His enjoyment to be bless'd;
Lead us to heaven, the seat of bliss,
Where pleasure in perfection is.

6s & 4s.

1. COME, thou almighty King,
Help us Thy name to sing,
Help us to praise!
Father all glorious,
O'er all victorious,

Come and reign over us,
Ancient of days.

2. Jesus, our Lord, descend;
From all our foes defend,
Nor let us fall;
Let Thine almighty aid
Our sure defense be made,
Our souls on Thee be stayed;
Lord, hear our call.

3. Come, thou incarnate Word
Gird on Thy mighty sword;
Our prayer attend;
Come, and Thy people bless;
Come, give Thy word success;
Spirit of holiness,

On us descend.

4. Come, holy Comforter,
Thy sacred witness bear,
In this glad hour:
Thou, who almighty art,
Now rule in every heart,
And ne'er from us depart,
Spirit of power.

5. To Thee, great One in Three,

The highest praises be,

Hence evermore;

BROWNE.
