Some time ago the design of publishing a volume of Sermons by Ministers of the Relief Synod was entertained by a few of the brethren, but surrendered on account of the invidiousness which they felt in the task of making a selection of contributors. When the publisher of the present volume adopted the design which they had abandoned, he felt their difficulty only in an inferior degree. His applications for contributions were made especially to Ministers whom he has the pleasure to number among his personal acquaintance and friends. The volume is, therefore, by no means to be considered as exhausting the strength of the Synod, excellent although, he is persuaded, it will be adjudged by the public. Should it prove successful, it is his intention to proceed with another volume by other hands, which, his friends who have already furnished specimens of their ministry will permit him to say, he is convinced, will not fall short in its excellence of the present.
