the Life; that, following the steps of thy holy Apostles, Saint Philip and Saint James, we may stedfastly walk in the way that leadeth to eternal life; through the same thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Saint Barnabas the Apostle. (JUNE 11.)

LORD God Almighty, who didst endue thy holy Apostle Barnabas with singular gifts of the Holy Ghost; Leave us not, we beseech thee, destitute of thy manifold gifts, nor yet of grace to use them alway to thy honour and glory; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Saint John Baptist's Day. + (JUNE 24.)

ALMIGHTY God, by whose providence thy servant John Baptist was wonderfully born, and sent to prepare the way of thy Son our Saviour, by preaching of repentance; Make us to follow his doctrine and holy life, that we may truly repent according to his preaching; and after his example constantly speak the truth, boldly rebuke vice, and patiently suffer for the truth's sake; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Saint Peter's Day. + (JUNE 29.)

ALMIGHTY God, who by thy Son Jesus Christ didst give to thine Apostle Saint Peter many excellent gifts, and commandedst him earnestly to feed thy flock; Make, we beseech thee, all Bishops and Pastors diligently to preach thy holy Word, and the people obediently to follow the same, that they may receive the crown of everlasting glory; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Saint James the Apostle. + (JULY 25.)

GRANT, O merciful God, that as thine holy Apostle Saint James, leaving his father and all that he had, without delay was obedient unto the calling of thy Son Jesus Christ, and followed him; so we, forsaking all worldly and carnal affections, may be evermore ready to follow thy holy commandments; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Saint Bartholomew the Apostle. + (AUG. 24.)

ALMIGHTY and everlasting God, who didst give thine Apostle Bartholomew grace truly to believe and to preach thy Word; Grant, we beseech thee, unto thy Church, to love that Word which he believed, and both to preach and receive the same; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Saint Matthew the Apostle. + (SEP. 21.)

ALMIGHTY God, who by thy blessed Son didst call Matthew from the receipt of custom to be an Apostle and Evangelist; Grant us grace to forsake all covetous desires, and inordinate love of riches, and to follow the same thy Son Jesus Christ, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Ghost, one God, world without end. Amen.

Saint Michael and all Angels. (SEP. 29.)

EVERLASTING God, who hast ordained and constituted the services of Angels and men in a wonderful order; Mercifully grant, that as thy holy Angels alway do thee service in heaven, so by thy appointment they may succour and defend us on earth; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Saint Luke the Evangelist. (OCT. 18.) ALMIGHTY God, who calledst Luke the

Physician, whose praise is in the Gospel, to be an Evangelist, and Physician of the soul; May it please thee, that, by the wholesome medicines of the doctrine delivered by him, all the diseases of our souls may be healed; through the merits of thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Saint Simon and Saint Jude, Apostles. +(OCT. 28.) ALMIGHTY God, who hast built thy Church upon the foundation of the Apostles and Prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the head cornerstone; Grant us so to be joined together in unity of spirit by their doctrine, that we may be made an holy temple acceptable unto thee; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

All Saints' Day. + (NOV. 21.)

ALMIGHTY God, who hast knit together thine elect in one communion and fellowship, in the mystical body of thy Son Christ our Lord; Grant us grace so to follow thy blessed Saints in all virtuous and godly living, that we may come to those unspeakable joys, which thou hast prepared for them that unfeignedly love thee; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

SENTENCES AND PRAYERS

TO BE USED BEFORE AND AFTER THE CELEBRATION OF

THE HOLY EUCHARIST.

¶ On Thursday, or some other day during the week before its Administration, let the Master read one or more of the following Sentences and Exhortations.

VERILY, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat

the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you. John vi.

Whoso eateth my flesh and drinketh my blood hath eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day for my flesh is meat indeed, and my blood is drink indeed.-Ib.

:

I am the bread which came down from heaven; if any one eat of this bread he shall live for ever. -Ib. He shall not die.-Ib.

The cup of blessing which (we) bless is it not the communion of the Blood of Christ? the bread which (we) break is it not the communion of the Body of Christ? 1 Cor. x.

We being many are one bread, for we are all partakers of that one bread.-Ib.

As often as ye eat this bread and drink this cup ye do shew forth the Lord's death till he come. 1 Cor. xi.

Let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup.-Ib.

The Exhortation.

We have been admonished by our Pastor, that day next it is his purpose, through God's assistance, to administer to all such as shall be religiously and devoutly disposed the most comfort

able Sacrament of the Body and Blood of Christ; to be by them received in remembrance of his meritorious Cross and Passion; whereby alone we obtain remission of our sins, and are made partakers of the Kingdom of Heaven. Wherefore it is our duty to render most humble and hearty thanks to Almighty God our heavenly Father, for that he hath given his Son our Saviour Jesus Christ, not only to die for us, but also to be our spiritual food and sustenance in that holy sacrament; and in the mean season to consider the dignity of that holy mystery, and the great peril of the unworthy receiving thereof; and so to search and examine our own consciences (and that not lightly, and after the manner of dissemblers with God; but so) that we may come holy and clean to such a heavenly Feast in the marriage-garment required by God in holy Scripture, and be received as worthy partakers of that holy Table.

¶ Or, if he finds his family slow to come to that Holy Communion, then the following.

IT

is intended on day next, by God's grace, to celebrate the Lord's Supper: unto which, in God's behalf, we all have been bidden and besought for the Lord Jesus Christ's sake, that we will not refuse to come thereto, being so lovingly called and bidden by God himself. As we love our own salvation, let us be partakers of this holy Communion. And as the Son of God did vouchsafe to yield up his soul by death upon the Cross for our salvation; so it is our duty to receive the Communion in remembrance of the sacrifice
