PHILOLOGY.-TWENTY-POUND PRIZE.

Twenty be given for the best ESSAY (a moderate Pamphlet size) showing there is no Linguistic Canon Law against the existence of Mixed Languages (as some modern Professors arbitrarily and dogmatically assert) in general, both in Europe and elsewhere; and that the present English Language, in particular, is a Mixed Language in Grammar, Pronunciation, and Vocabulary, being half-way between the German (Low) and French (Old), or, more scientifically, between the Teutonic and Romance. The Essays to be sent in before 1st August, 1875; the name, &c., of the Writer to be sent in a note-sealed Envelope, which will not be opened till the Award is made. The Prize Essay will be submitted to leading Unbiassed and Impartial Philologists, both British and American, and afterwards Printed, and Read at one of the Meetings of one of the first Literary Societies of London. No Award will be made unless the Judges are satisfied with the merits of one Essay at least.
