They shall go on from strength to strength,
And still approach more near,
Till all in Zion's holy mount

Before our God appear!

PSALM LXXXIV.-Version 2. (c. M.)

O LORD, thou mighty God of hosts,
My humble prayer regard;
Thou God of Jacob, let my cry

With favour still be heard.

For in thy courts one single day
"Tis better to attend,

Than, Lord, in any other place
A thousand days to spend.

For God, who is our sun and shield,
Will grace and glory give;
And no good thing will he withhold
From them that justly live.

O God, whom heav'nly hosts obey,
How highly blest is he,

Whose hope, and trust, securely placed,
Are surely fixt on thee.

PSALM LXXXV.-(c. M.)

IN mercy, Lord, do thou our hearts
To thine obedience turn:
Behold our tears, receive our prayers,
Nor let thine anger burn.

Thy gracious favor, Lord, display,
Which we have long implor'd;
And for thy wondrous mercy's sake
Thy promis'd aid afford.

Since mercy now with truth is join'd,
And righteousness with peace,
Thy goodness doth thy saints surround,
And all their joys increase.

PSALM XC.—(c. м.)

O GOD! our help in ages past,
Our hope for years to come,
Our shelter from the stormy blast,
And our eternal home!

Before the hills in order stood,
Or earth receiv'd her frame,
From everlasting thou art God;
To endless years the same.
A thousand ages, in thy sight,
Are like an ev'ning gone;

Short as the watch that ends the night
Before the rising sun.

So teach us to compute our days,
And so our hearts apply,

That safely we, through wisdom's ways,

May reach eternity.

O God, our help in ages past,

Our hope for years to come,

Be thou our guard, while life shall last, And our eternal home.

PSALM XCIII.—(P. M.)

THE Lord is King, with glory crown'd, The Lord with strength is girded round; The Lord hath made the world so fast, That evermore its strength shall last:

Of old establish'd is thy throne,
Thou, the eternal God alone!

The floods, O Lord! increase in might,
Their voices swell, their waves affright;
But God is mightier far than they;
God can the mighty waters stay.
His word is true, his holy place
Shall holiness for ever grace.

PSALM XCIV.-Version 1. (L. M.)

CAN guilty man indeed believe

That He, who made and knows the heart, Shall not th' oppressor's crimes perceive, Nor take his injur'd servant's part? Shall He, who with such wondrous skill Fashioned the and form'd the ear; eye, Who modell'd nature to his will,

Shall He not see?-shall He not hear? Shall He, who fram'd the human mind, And bade its spark of life to glow, Who all its varied powers combin'd, What He has made, shall He not know? Vain hope! His eye at once surveys Whatever fills creation's space;

He sees our thoughts, and marks our ways, He knows no bounds of time or place.

PSALM XCIV.-Version 2. (c. M. D.)
BLEST is the man, whom thou, O Lord,
In kindness dost chastise;

And by thy sacred rules to walk
Dost lovingly advise.

For he shall rest and safety find,
In seasons of distress:

Whilst God prepares a pit for those
That stubbornly transgress.

For God will never from his saints
His favour wholly take;
His own possession and his lot
He never will forsake.

My sure defence is firmly placed
In God the Lord Most High:
He is my rock, to which I may
For refuge always fly.

PSALM XCV.—(L. M.)

O COME, loud anthems let us sing,
Loud thanks to our Almighty King,
For we our voices high should raise,
When our salvation's rock we praise.
Into his presence let us haste,
To thank him for his favours past:
To him address, in joyful songs,
The praise that to his name belongs.
For God, the Lord, enthron'd in state,
Is, with unrivall'd glory, great;
A King superior far to all,

Whom gods the heathen falsely call.
O let us to his courts repair,
And bow with adoration there;
For he's our God, our Shepherd he,
His flock, and pasture sheep are we.

PSALM XCVIII.—(c. m.)

Joy to the world! the Lord is come!
Let earth receive her King:
Let ev'ry heart prepare him room,
Let ev'ry creature sing.

Joy to the earth! the Saviour reigns!
Let men their songs employ;

While seas and shores, rocks, hills, and plains
Repeat the sounding joy.

Let the whole earth his love proclaim,
With all her different tongues;
And spread the honours of his name
In melody and songs.

He rules the world with truth and grace;
And makes the nations prove
The glories of his righteousness,
And wonders of his love.

PSALM XCIX.-(s. M.)

THE Lord Jehovah reigns,

Let all the nations fear;
Let sinners tremble at his feet,
And saints be humbled there.

In Zion is his throne,

His honors are divine:

His church shall make his wonders known, For there his glories shine.

How holy is his name!

How awful is his praise!

Justice, and truth, and wisdom join

In all his works of grace.
