O may my

soul on thee repose,

And may sweet sleep mine eyelids close:
Sleep, that shall me more active make,
To serve my God when I awake.

Praise God, from whom all blessings flow;
Praise him, all creatures here below;
Praise him above, ye heav'nly host,
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

HYMN LXXXVII.—(L. M.)

O THOU, at whose almighty word

The glorious light from darkness sprung! Thy quickening influence afford,

And clothe with power the preacher's tongue. 'Tis thine to teach him how to speak; "Tis thine to give the hearing ear; 'Tis thine the stubborn heart to break, And make the careless sinner fear. 'Tis also thine, Almighty Lord,

To cheer the poor desponding heart;
To speak the soul-reviving word,

And bid the mourner's fears depart.
Thus would we at thy feet be found,
And thus on thee alone depend,
To make the Gospel's joyful sound
Effectual to the promised end.

HYMN LXXXVIII.-(c. M.)
ALMIGHTY God, eternal Lord,
Thy gracious pow'r make known:
Warm by the virtue of thy word,
And melt the heart of stone.

3

Speak with the voice that wakes the dead,
And bid the sleeper rise;

And make his guilty conscience dread

The death that never dies.

Let us receive the word we hear,

Each in an honest heart;

Lay up the precious treasure there,
And never with it part.

Now let our darkness comprehend
The light, that shines so clear;
Now the glad tidings freely send,
And give us ears to hear.

HYMN LXXXIX.-(P. M.)

GOD, that madest earth and heav'n,
Darkness and light;
Who the day for toil hast given;
For rest, the night;

May thine angel-guards defend us,
Slumber sweet thy mercy send us,
Holy dreams and hopes attend us,
This live-long night!

HYMN XC.-(L. M.)

DISMISS US with thy blessing, Lord;
Help us to profit by thy word;
Our sins this holy day forgive,
And let thy truth within us live!
Though we are guilty, thou art good:
Wash all our works in Jesu's blood;
Give ev'ry troubled soul release,
And bid us all depart in peace!

HYMN XCI.-(P. M.)

CHRISTIANS! brethren! ere we part,
Ev'ry voice and ev'ry heart

One glad hymn to God should raise,
One high song of grateful praise.
Here we all may meet no more,
But there is a happier shore;
There, releas'd from toil and pain,
Brethren, may we meet again.

HYMN XCII.—(P. M.)

MAY the grace of Christ our Saviour,
And the Father's boundless love,
With the Holy Spirit's favour,
Rest upon us from above!

Thus may we abide in union

With each other and the Lord; And possess, in blest communion, Joys which earth cannot afford!

HYMN XCIII.-(P. M.)
LORD! dismiss us with thy blessing,
Fill our hearts with joy and peace;
Let us each, thy love possessing,
Triumph in redeeming grace.
O refresh us,

Travelling through this wilderness.
Thanks we give and adoration

For the Gospel's joyful sound;
May the fruits of thy salvation
In our hearts and lives abound:

May thy presence

With us evermore be found!

1.-(s. M.)

To Father, Spirit, Son,

Whom angel hosts adore,

Give worship, honour, glory, power,
Both now and evermore.

2.—(C. M.)

To Father, Son, and Holy Ghost,
The God whom we adore,
Be glory, as it was, is now,
And shall be evermore.

3.-(L. M.)

To Father, Son, and Holy Ghost,
The God whom earth and heav'n adore,
Be glory, as it was of old,

Is now, and shall be evermore.

4. (P. M.)

By angels in heav'n, of every degree,

And saints upon earth, all praise be addrest To God, three in person, one God, ever blest, As it has been, now is, and always shall be.

5.-(P. M.)

Immortal praise to thee,
O Father, Spirit, Son,
The undivided Three,

The great mysterious One:
With all her pow'rs,

Where reason fails,

There love adores,

And faith prevails.

[blocks in formation]

Behold we come, good Lord, to thee

Blest is the man, whom thou, O Lord
Blest is the man that stands in awe
Blest be thy love, good Lord

Bless'd, who the Lord his help hath made
Bread of Heav'n! on Thee we feed
By angels in heav'n, of every degree
Can guilty man indeed believe

Christ is gone up with a joyful sound -
Christians! brethren! ere we part
Come, Holy Ghost, our souls inspire
Come, gracious Spirit, heav'nly Dove
Come, let us join our cheerful songs
Dismiss us with thy blessing, Lord
Eternal source of every joy

[ocr errors]

Father of heav'n, whose love profound
Father of mercies, bow thine ear
Father of mercies, send thy grace
Father of mercies! let our songs
Father! whate'er of earthly bliss
Forgive, O Lord, our wand'rings past
Forth in thy name, O Lord, we go
From Greenland's icy mountains
From Calv'ry's cross a fountain flows
From all that dwell below the skies
From lowest depths of woe

Give to the Lord, ye sons of men
