force of the illustration rests on a single word, the letter of reference is placed imme diately after that word. This has been the general rule; and the exceptions have either been unavoidable, or are quite immaterial.

To secure the greatest possible accuracy, a faithful person, well conversant with the Scriptures, but otherwise unconnected with the Work, has been employed diligently to examine every Reference after the Printer's revisions had been completed, that the labour and design of the Editor might not be frustrated by any accidental oversight or mistake of the compositor, or of the correctors of the press.

in referring to several relations of the same facts, by different Writers in the Sacred Volume, (as in the histories recorded by the Four Evangelists, and in those contained in the Books of Kings and Chronicles,) the corresponding chapters, or parts of chapters in each, having been once noted at the beginning of the history or subject, it has not been thought necessary to repeat those references in the subsequent verses, except where something material is to be noticed. Thus also in the prophecy of Obadiah, which relates chiefly to the destruction of the Edomites, the prophecies of Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, and Amos, on the same subject, having been once pointed out at the commencement, are not again referred to. And so in the history of our Lord's temptation, given in the fourth chapter of the Gos pel by St. Matthew, reference being made from the first verse to the fourth chapter of that by St. Luke, where the same bistory is recorded, no further reference is made to that chapter in the subsequent verses; the connexion of the whole being obvious, and the comparison easy. More space has been thus retained for the illustration or confirmation of the subjects or sentences individually, which are comprised in the particular parts of the history or discourse.

For a similar reason, where the same identical words, or nearly so, might be found in a great number of texts, a few of these only have been selected ;-illustration, not repetition, having been the object in view.

The references, therefore, which fill the middle column have all been diligently considered and applied with a particular attention to this specific end, that none which were superfluous might be introduced, while the most material purposes to be answered by References might nevertheless be effec tually secured. Few references occupy more than a single line; and the whole together. Cindependently of the Work entitled ** THE TREASURY OF SCRIPTURE-KNOWLEDGE," form a body of illustration of Scripture by Scripture, containing more than sixty thousand lines, the compilation of which has taken between three and four years to complete.

WHETHER the latitude or the limits of such an undertaking be considered, it is proper that the principles on which it has been conducted should be so far explained, as that the Reader may be apprised of what he is to expect from it, and in what branches of religious inquiry it may most materially assist him.

In that grand enunciation of the dignity and design of the Sacred Volume, which is given by the Apostle Paul, (2 Tim. n. 16, 17.) we are told, that " ALL SCRIPTURE

To exhibi then, the harmony of the Sacred Writers o the subjects of which they treat, has been th primary design of this selection. And & there are some objects of leading importance in which all the rest are included, and b means of which the harmony and perfectio of the Inspired Pages are written, as wit the beams of the sun; to these especial car and attention have been devoted.

I. It has appeared an object of the firs magnitude, that the reader of the Holy Scriptures should be assisted by references. from text to text, to have constantly in view the connexion of all the divine attributes, and the holy uniformity of God, in his go vernment, both of his Church, and of the world. A display of the true character and perfections of God is, without dispute, one chief design of the Inspired Volume. Here. as in Isaiah's miraculous vision, may Jeho vah be seen, sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up; his train fills the temple, and the Sacred Writers, like the Seraphim, cover. themselves, and cry one to another, and say, HOLY, HOLY, HOLY, IS THE LORD OF HOSTS, THE WHOLE EARTH IS FULL OF HIS GLORY. It is this whichs gives to the Scripture its superlative gran. deur. By it, God is known; his will is promulgated; his purposes are revealed; his mercy is announced; and he is every where exhibited as worthy of the supreme. adoration, love, service, and praise of all his intelligent creatures. Little do those who neglect their Bibles think what refined delight they lose, by thus turning away their eyes from the most sublime, the most glori ous, and the most beatifying object of contemplation, that the whole universe affords.

11. But this manifestation of the Divine character and government is not presented to us as a matter of mere speculation, in which we have no immediate and personal interest. The Holy Scriptures are designed to promote the Glory of God BY THE SALVATION OF MAN. The peculiar purpose of the whole is to turn men from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God; to raise them from the ruins of the Fall, and to put them in possession of the blessings of Redemption; to lead them from sin to holiness; to conduct them through a state of conflict and trial on earth, to a state of rest and felicity in heaven; and so to assist and direct them in all possible conditions in life, that they may not fail of these great ends, except by their own wilful

V. The concurrence of the Old and New Testaments with each other, and the relation of the types before, and under the Mosaic law, to their completion under the Gospel, have been studiously regarded, so as to render it evident, that, whatever variations may have been made in the form and administration of external worship, true religion, under the former dispensatious, was always essentially the same as true religion under the present; that "he is not a lew "which is one outwardly; neither is that

praise is not of men, but of God. For in "every nation, he that feareth God, and "worketh righteousness, is accepted of him." Rom. ii. 28, £). Acts x. 35. In this, the revelation made before the institution of the Levitical priesthood, that made during its continuance, and that which has been made since its termination, all agree. The Mosaic ritual was the shadow of good things to come so were the priesthood and kingdom of Melchisedec, and the body is Christ, who is essentially the same, both in his person, and in his government, yesterday, to day, and for ever. Heb. xiii. 8.

VI. But the instruction diffused through the Scriptures, respecting the gracious and indispensable operations of the Holy Ghost. the Sanctifier, has not been forgotten; and

the references on this article will show that, as to His sacred influence on the minds of the Inspired Penmen, we are indebted for all the truths they have taught us, so to His influence on the minds of those who receive and regard them, must such persons be indebted for all they have learned, or can learn of them. His work completes the great design of the whole; and His assistance and blessing are distinctly promised to all who sincerely ask them.

X. The agreement of the Sacred Write with each other will be found not only exist in the subjects on which they tre but to extend to their own individual ch racters. It will appear that they were animated by the same Spirit,-that they we all holy men, speaking as they were mov by the Holy Ghost, calling men to holine as the indispensable requisite to the enjo ment of everlasting happiness;-men, nevi

VII. As the Scriptures harmonize in their primary and general objects, so do they with regard to the particular subjects comprehended in their plan. Historical accounts are verified by other coincident ones, or by accounts of the persons or places to which they refer. The prophecies of one Prophet, concerning events which were to take place, relating either to kingdoms, families, iudividuals, or the world at large, are consistent with those pronounced by other Prophets.theless, of like passions with ourselves, c The accounts of the Jewish polity under its various vicissitudes, are confirmed by the writings of the Prophets who lived during or after those vicissitudes; while the former tend reciprocally to establish the authenticity of the latter. The histories of the Four Evangelists have a regular connexion and parallelism, especially those of Matthew, Mark, and Luke. The recital of the transactions of the Apostles, after the ascension of our Lord, strongly authenticates the Apostolic Epistles; and Archdeacon Paley has well shown the confirmation which the Epistles of St. Paul derive from the circumstances recorded by St. Luke, in his book of the Acts. Prophecies are connected with their accomplishments, as far as those accomplishments are included in the Scripture History. Promises and threatenings are connected with their respective fulfilments; precept with example, and with supplication; and the prayers of believers with the answers they have received. All these relations have been carefully regarded in this compilation.

VIII. Further, the Scriptures are not merely intended to lead men to godliness : they are intended also to exemplify it. Repentance, Faith, Hope, Charity, and Devotion, are here exhibited in the most perfect models; and it has therefore entered into the design of this Work to show the corresponding emotions and conduct of the saints, both of the Old Testament and the New, when under the influence of those dispositions, contemplations, and emotions which are most peculiarly characteristic of true piety; and also to connect the devotional parts of Scripture with the occurrences which gave rise to them, as far as they can be ascertained. Thus is religion known by its fruits -not as a thing merely of times and circumstances, but a living principle in the mind, which times and circumstances call into action, and contribute to display.

IX. The aphoristic and poetical parts of the Sacred Writings are also connected, so as to illustrate and enforce each other, that the Reader may be constantly impressed with those momentous truths, and that sublime language with which they abound, and which afford perpetual food for the best exercises of the understanding, and the finest emotions of the heart;-at once furnishing materials for the most rational entertain

highly approved, in the English Version of the Polyglott Bible. As this work is in tended to be interleaved with the different versions of The Polyglott Bible, the object has been to make each page correspondi in chapter and verse with those versatus. In some cases, where the references are not sufficiently numerous to fill the page, philo logical and explanatory Notes have been added, elucidating many passages which are at present obscure, resulting from an imperfect acquaintance with ancient and oriental customs. By many, this work at first view may appear to be a reprint of the Scripture Harmony, which has been on sale and greatly valued by a large num ber of Bible Christians for many years, but on comparison, and a closer examination, a very important improvement will present itself, which may be best shown by explaining the great defect of the former work, as well as elucidating this. In the

Scripture Harmony,' the whole of the references to a verse were arranged thus >— the verses were first introduced that belonged to the chapter to which the verse under consideration be onged, then the chapter in the book itself, after which the references were arranged, in the usual order of English Bibles, from Genesis to Revelation.

If the references belonged to every part of the verse equally, there would be great propriety in this arrangement; but as many of the verses require elucidation In their separate parts, a mode of dividing them, to save labour to the student, was considered necessary. This has been easily accomplished where marks are thrown into the text to correspond with those in the margin, but to accommodate a divided

mass of references to the text, without the use of arbitrary signs, necessarily involved the introduction of the

PRESENT PLAN,

which is best exemplified by the following verse, and shows the peculiar necessity of a division of the parallel pasages:

By reading the text of this verse, it will be seen that the use of the word 'Blessed' is the first of the sentence illustrated by the references which follow it, and by the second word, 'layeth,' the end of the first sentence and the beginning of the second are determined, and so on throughout. The additions to a single word point out the particular part of the verse, when the same word twice occurs: thus 'keepeth the' and keepeth his' occur in this case.

When the references illustrate the whole verse, the italic words are not printed, because not required.

When this work is interprinted with the English Version of the Polyglott (in which manner it is called "THE TREASURY BIBLE," the arbitrary signs in the text apply solely to the centre column in that page.

The chronology at the top of each page denotes the date of the transactions related at the beginning of such page; and the chronology which is inserted at the beginning of verses reters to the date of the transaction detailed in the verse before the references of which it is placed.

To preserve the distinction between the Various Readings and the editorial remarks and explanations which occur, the word "or" in the one case is printed in italics, with a small o; in the other in roman, with a capital 0: thus, Gen. 4. 13, “* My punishment is greater than I can bear, or, Mine iniquity is greater than that it may be forgiven." In Gen. 19. 1, it is said, And there came two angels. Or rather, the two angels came,' " &c.

In places where a Various Reading occurs, and the whole, or part of the verse to which it refers has been deemed too long for insertion, a few words only have been given, as the reader, ou referring to his Bible, has the passage in full: thus, Prov. 28. 2," by a man, &c. or, by men of un

derstanding and wisdom shall they like be prolonged."

In the Various Readings, as in the Sc tures themselves, the words supplied the translators are distinguished by ital but the distinction has not been thou necessary to be preserved in those part the text to which the Parallel Texts rei they have alike been printed in italics.

A period is placed between chapter verse; a comma between verse and ver and two dots (..) show 17..23 to mear to 23. This brief explanation will, it is hop adapt the work for use with EVERY E TION of the Holy Scriptures.
