His beams thro' all the nations run,
And life and light convey.

2 But where the gospel comes
It fpreads diviner light,

It calls dead finners from their tombs,
And gives the blind their fight.
3 How perfect is thy word!
And all thy judgments juft,
For ever fure thy promife, Lord,
And men fecurely trust.

4 My gracious God, how plain Are thy directions giv'n!

may I never read in vain,

But find the path to heav'n!

PAUSE.

5 I hear thy word with love,
And I would fain obey;
Send thy good Spirit from above
To guide me, left I ftray.
60 who can ever find

The errors of his ways?
Yet with a bold prefumptuous mind
I would not dare tranfgrefs.

7 Warn me of ev'ry fin,
Forgive my fecret faults,

And cleante this guilty foul of mine,
Whofe crimes exceed my thoughts.
While with my heart and tongue
I fpread thy praise abroad;
Accept the worship and the fong,
My Saviour and my God.

PSALM XIX. Long Metre.

The books of nature and fcripture compared; or, The glory and fuccefs of the gospel.

TH

HE heav'ns declare thy glory, Lord,
In ev'ry ftar thy wisdom fhines;
But when our eyes behold thy word,
We read thy name in fairer lines.
2 The rolling fun, the changing light,
And nights and days thy pow'r confefs;
But the bleft volume thou hast writ
Reveals thy justice and thy grace.

3 Sun, moon, and ftars convey thy praise
Round the whole earth, and never fland:
So when thy truth begun its race,
It touch'd, and glanc'd on ev'ry land.
4 Nor fhall thy fpreading gospel rest
Till thro' the world thy truth has run;
Till Chrift has all the nations bleft
That fee the light, or feel the fun.
5 Great Sun of righteousness, arise,
Bless the dark world with heav'nly light;
Thy gospel makes the fimple wife,
Thy laws are pure, thy judgments right.
6 Thy nobleft wonders here we view,
In fouls renew'd, and fins forgiv❜n:
Lord, cleanfe my fins, my foul renew,
And make thy word my guide to heav'n.

PSALM XIX. To the tune of the 113th Pfalm.
The book of nature and scripture.

'G

REAT God, the heav'n's well order'd frame,
Declares the glories of thy name:

There thy rich works of wonder fhine,
A thoufand ftarry beauties there,
A thoufand radiant marks appear

Of boundless pow'r, and fkill divine.
2 From night to day, from day to night,
The dawning and the dying light,
Lectures of heav'nly wifdom read;
With filent eloquence they raise
Our thoughts to our Creator's praise,
And neither found nor language need.
3 Yet their divine inftructions run
Far as the journies of the fun;

And ev'ry nation knows their voice:
The fun, like fome young bridegroom dreft,
Breaks from the chambers of the east,

Rolls round, and makes the earth rejoice.
4 Where'er he spreads his beams abroad,
He fmiles and speaks his maker God:
All nature joins to fhew thy praife:
Thus God in ev'ry creature fhines;
Fair are the book of nature's lines,
But fairer is the book of grace.

PAUSE.

I love the volumes of thy word;
What light and joy thofe leaves afford
To fouls benighted and distrest!
Thy precepts guide my doubtful way,
Thy fear forbids my feet to ftray,
Thy promise leads my heart to reft.

6 From the difcoveries of thy law
The perfect rules of life I draw:
Thefe are my study and delight;
Ca

Not honey fo invites the taste,

Nor gold that hath the furnace past,
Appears fo pleafing to the fight.
7 Thy threatnings wake my flumbring eyes,
And warn me where my danger lies;
But 'tis thy bleffed gofpel, Lord,
That makes my guilty confcience clean,
Converts my foul, fubdues my fin,

And gives a free, but large reward.
8 Who knows the errors of his thoughts?
My God, forgive my fecret faults,
And from prefumptuous fins reftrain:
Accept my poor attempts of praise,
That I have read thy book of grace
And book of nature not in vain.

PSALM· XX.

Prayer and hope of victory. For a day of prayer in time of war. TOW may the God of pow'r and grace Attend his people's humble cry! Jehovah hears when Ifra'l prays, And brings deliv'rance from on high. 2. The name of Jacob's God defends Better than fhields or brazen walls; He from his fanctuary fends

Succour and ftrength when Zion calls.

3 Well he remembers all our fighs, His love exceeds our beft deferts: His love accepts the facrifice

Of humble groans and broken hearts.

4 In his falvation is our hope,
And in the name of Ifra'l's God,

Our troops fhall lift their banners up,
Our navies fpread their flags abroad.
5 Some trust in horfes train'd for war,
And fome of chariots make their boasts:
Our fureft expectations are

From thee, the Lord of heav'nly hofts. 6 го may the memory of thy name Infpire our armies for the fight!

Our foes fhall fall and die with fhame,
Or quit the field with fhameful flight.] ·
7 Now fave us, Lord, from flavish fear,
Now let our hope be firm and strong,
Till thy falvation shall appear,

And joy and triumph raise the fong.

PSALM XXI. Common Metre.
Our King is the care of Heaven.
HE King, O Lord, with fongs of praise
Shall in thy ftrength rejoice;

[ocr errors]

And bleft with thy falvation, raise

To heav'n his chearful voice.

2 Thy fure defence thro' nations round:
Has fpread his glorious name;
And his fuccefsful actions crown'd.
With majesty and fame.

3 Then let the king on God alone
For timely aid rely;

His mercy fhall fupport the throne
And all our wants fupply.

4 But, righteous Lord, his ftubborn foes
Shall feel thy dreadful hand:

Thy vengeful arm (hall find out those
That hate his mild command.
