4 Thy favour, all my journey through, Thou art engag'd to grant;
What else I want, or think I do, "Tis better still to want.
5 Wisdom and mercy guide my way, Shall I resist them both?
A poor blind creature of a day, And crush'd before the moth!
6 But ah! my inward spirit cries, Still bind me to thy sway;
Else the next cloud that veils my skies, Drives all these thoughts away.
05. Prayer for quickening Grace. (C. M.)
1 MY soul lies cleaving to the dust; Μ Lord, give me life divine;
From vain desires, and ev'ry lust, Turn off these eyes of mine.
2 I need the influence of thy grace, To speed me in thy way; Lest I should loiter in my race, Or turn my feet astray.
3 When sore afflictions press me down, I need thy quick'ning pow'rs; Thy word that I have rested on, Shall help my heaviest hours.
4 Are not thy mercies sov'reign still, And thou a faithful God?
Wilt thou not grant me warmer zeal, To run the heav'nly road?
5 Does not my heart thy precepts love, And long to see thy face? And yet how slow my spirits move, Without enliv'ning grace!
6 Then shall I love thy gospel more, And ne'er forget thy word;
When I have felt its quick'ning pow'r, To draw me near the Lord.
606. The Pilgrim's Prayer. Psalm xlviii. 14.
UIDE me, O thou great Jehovah! Pilgrim through this barren land; I am weak, but thou art mighty, Hold me with thy powerful hand : Bread of heaven, bread of heaven, and evermore.
2 Open now the chrystal fountain, Whence the healing streams do flow; Let the fiery, cloudy pillar,
Lead me all my journey through; Strong Deliverer, strong Deliverer, Be thou still my strength and shield.
3 When I tread the verge of Jordan, Bid my anxious fears subside; Bear me through the swelling current, Land me safe on Canaan's side. Songs of praises, songs of praises, I will ever give to thee.
Wrestling Jacob. (P. M.)
NOME, O thou traveller unknown, Whom still I hold, but cannot see; My company before is gone,
And I am left alone with thee: With thee all night I mean to stay, And wrestle till the break of day. 2 In vain thou strugglest to get free, I never will unloose my hold:
Art thou the man that died for me? The secret of thy love unfold: Wrestling, I will not let thee go, Till I thy name, thy nature know. 3 Wilt thou not yet to me reveal Thy new, unutterable name? Tell me, I still beseech thee tell; To know it now resolv'd I am : Wrestling, I will not let thee go, Till I thy name, thy nature know.
4 What though my shrinking flesh complain, And murmur to contend so long?
I rise superior to my pain;
When I am weak, then I am strong: And when my all of strength shall fail, I shall with thee, my Lord, prevail.
5 Yield to me now, for I am weak; But confident in self-despair! Speak to my heart, in blessings speak; Be conquer'd by my instant prayer: Speak, or thou never hence shalt move, And tell me if thy name be Love?
6 I know thee, Saviour, who thou art, Jesus, the feeble sinner's Friend; Nor wilt thou with the night depart, But stay and love me to the end: Thy mercies never shall remove; Thy nature, and thy name is Love. 7 Contented now upon my thigh I halt, till life's short journey end; All helplessness, all weakness I, On thee alone for strength depend: Nor have I power. from thee to move; Thy nature, and thy name is Love. 8 Lame as I am, I take the prey! Hell, earth, and sin, with ease o'ercome! I leap for joy, pursue my way, And as a bounding hart fly home, Through all eternity to prove Thy nature, and thy name is love.
608. Ask what I shall give thee. 1 Kings iii. 5.
OME, my soul, thy suit prepare, Jesus loves to answer prayer: He himself has bid thee pray, Therefore will not say thee nay. 2 Thou art coming to a King, Large petitions with thee bring; For his grace and pow'r are such, None can ever ask too much.
3 With my burden I begin :- Lord, remove this load of sin! Let thy blood, for sinners spilt, Set my conscience free from guilt.
4 Lord, I come to thee for rest, Take possession of my breast! There thy blood-bought right maintain, And without a rival reign.
5 As the image in the glass, Answers the beholder's face, Thus unto my heart appear, Print thine own resemblance here. 6 While I am a pilgrim here, Let thy love my spirit cheer: As my Guide, my Guard, my Friend, Lead me to my journey's end.
7 Show me what I have to do; Ev'ry hour my strength renew: Let me live a life of faith, Let me die thy people's death.
309. Prayer for Contentment. (C.M.)
1 FATHER, whate'er of earthly bliss,
Thy sov'reign will denies;
Accepted at thy throne of grace, Let this petition rise:
2" Give me a calm and thankful heart, "From every murmur free; "The blessings of thy grace impart, "And make me live to thee.
3" Let the sweet hope that thou art mine, "My life and death attend;
"Thy presence through my journey shine, "And crown my journey's end.
