T H E Court being prepared for proceeding on fire Caufe of the Petticoat, I gave Orders to bring in a Criminal who was taken u as (he went out of the puppet-show about three Nights ago, and was now fiandi in the Street with a great Concourfe of People about ter. Word was brought me, that {be endea vented twice or thrice to come in, but could n0t do it by reafon of her Petticoat, which was too lar e for the Entrance of my Houfe, though I had ordere both the folding-doors to be thrown 0 en for its Reception. Upon this, I defired the Jury of Matrons, who flood at my Right Hand, to inform themfelves of her Conf dition, and know whether there were any private Beav fons why fhe might not make her Appearance feparare from her Petticoat. This was managed with reat Dif. Cretion, and had fuch an Eifea, that upon t e Return of the Verdifi from the Bench of Matrons, I ifl'ucd out an Order forthwith, That the Criminal fhould be {hip ped'of her Incumbrances, till lhe became little enon h to enter my Houf'e. I had before given Direétions or an Engine of feveral Legs, that could contrafi or open it felf like the Top of' an Umbrello, in order to place' the Petticoat upon it, by which Means I might take a leifurely Survey of it, asit fhopld appearin its proper Dimenfions. This was all done accordingl and forthwith, upon the clofing of the Engine, the Petti coat was brought into Court. I then dtre&ed the Ma chine to be {er upon the Table, and dilated in f'uch a Manna as to ibew the Garment in its utmofi Circumfe. Fence 5 but my great Hall was too narrow for the Expe.
