VIGNETTE TITLE TO THE Canto.
Day set on Norham's castled steep.
And Tweed's fair river, broad and deep.
Along the bridge Lord Marmion rode,
Proudly his red-roan charger trode.
And placed him in the upper place-
They feasted full and high.
Norham is grim and grated close,
Hemm'd in by battlement and fosse.
The summond Palmer came in place;
His sable cowl o'erhung his face.
Soon in the castle nought was heard
But the slow footstep of the guard.
