gregation. In the Kingdom of Saxony we have 12 circuits and 15 preachers, and here we are making remarkable progress in spite of many obstacles. A church has been organized in Dresden. The congregation on the Reichenbach Circuit has a very high social standing, and has been very prosperous during the past year."

Rev. K. Schell, Presiding Elder of the Berlin District, reports: "It was a great and responsible enterprise to establish Methodist churches in Danzig, Königsberg, Breslau, Liegnitz, Graudenz, in these old Prussian provinces, without a special help from our Conference; but, through the blessing of the Lord, and by the help of a lady who is especially interested in this part of our work, we were able to take it up. About 200 persons in these new fields of labor have been received into our Church. In the same glorious way our work in Austria-Hungary has grown, where we are working among Germans, Bohemians, and Slavs. From Bohemia, as well as from Hungary, we are earnestly requested to send Methodist ministers, with the light of the glorious Gospel, into those dark Catholic countries. We have already begun work in Buda-Pesth and in the old coronation capital of Presburg. Also from our old societies in Berlin, Pomerania, and Silesia we report revivals and conversions and a good number of accessions. The 16 circuits of the Berlin District report a net increase of 325 members. Five of our circuits were previously Wesleyan circuits, and all of them have been blessed with revivals."

Rev. J. Kaufmann, Presiding Elder of the Frank-
furt District, reports: "On the Frankfurt District
there are 300 souls who, according to the reports
of the preachers in charge, have been converted.
There are 65 Sunday schools, with 2,137 scholars,
of whom 816 are boys and 1,321 are girls, and 1,491
are the children of nonmembers and 646 children of
members of the Church. The preachers report that
156 of our children have this year found the Saviour,
and about 600 children attend the public services
regularly. There are 56 local preachers, and not a
small part of our success is to be ascribed to these
vigorous coworkers. Our sisters have also shown
brisk activity, and on the district are 21 young
women associations, with 326 members. We have a
membership of 1,908. Of these 655 are males and
1,253 are females. We have also 1,300 friends who
are more or less regular attendants at our services,
and some of whom have been led to Christ through
our work. We have this year begun work in the
populous towns of Elberfield and Barmen. The Sindelfingen...

lately been organized. Our work influences with in-
citement and inspiration other societies of believers,
and our relation to other denominations standing on
the ground of the Evangelical Alliance steadily
grows more favorable."

Rev. H. Mann, Presiding Elder of the Stuttgart District, reports: "The union of 21 Wesleyan circuits, with 27 pastors, 2,008 church members, and 3,767 Sunday school scholars, with the South Ger

many Conference so enlarged the Stuttgart District that it had to be divided into two-called the Stuttgart District and the Heilbronn District. The new Stuttgart District comprises 17 circuits, 13 of them

formerly belonging to the Wesleyan work. All but three have had visible success, and there has been a net increase of 198. Especially in Stuttgart and in Cannstadt has the Lord blessed us. During the year 406 persons were converted on the district, and the work is going on in a hopeful manner. There are several places where we are obliged to hire rooms for preaching places in localities that are not good, and we greatly need money to erect plain church buildings for our people, and if we had these our success would be much greater."

Switzerland.

THE Switzerland Conference includes the work in Switzerland and those portions of France where the German language is spoken. The Mission was commenced in 1856 by preachers from Germany, and was organized as a Conference in 1886.

CONFERENCE SESSION.

The Switzerland Conference was held in St. Gallen, Switzerland, June 8-14, 1898, Bishop Waiden presiding. Johannes Beerli and Martin Bührer were received on trial. Adolf Werli was discontinued. Ludwig Brandle was supernumerary, and Heinrich Nuelson and Johannes Schneebeli were superannuated. The aggregate of the benevolent collections was $2,480. There are 7 local preachers, 39 churches, 9 parsonages. During the year there were 189 children and 2 adults baptized. The following were the appointments:

BERN DISTRICT.-Gottfried Baer, P. E. (P. O., Inselgasse 4, Bern, Switzerland). Basel: First Church, J. H. Wuhrmann; Second Church, Jacob Strassler. Bern, Jacob Spörri. Biel, Heinrich Huber, R. E. of our members are poor, but they love their Church, and do for it as much as they can. It is necessary for us to have chapels on all the larger stations. We have bought lots in three places, where we hope to build chapels. In one other place a lot was given us, and we are erecting a chapel. We have 113 Sunday schools, with 9,660 scholars; an increase of 366. About 1,250 are children of those who are members of our Church, and 8,410 are children of those who are not members. Many children were converted last year. Our Book Concern in Zurich is in good condition. In the deaconess work at Zurich are 17 sisters, who visit and help the sick and the poor.

Peter, Presiding Elder of the Zurich District, belong to families not members of our Church, and reports: "On the Zurich District there are 14 circuits, the parents send their sons and daughters to the 110 preaching places, 3,613 members, and 479 proba- | catechism instruction of the National Church, hence tioners; an increase of 167 in the membership. Most only 144 children are in our Bible and catechism

classes. We work in a hard field, and our friends are slow in joining our Church. Our congregations have a good direct influence on the world and on the other Churches, for these Churches copy our methods more and more."

Rev. G. Baer, Presiding Elder of the Bern District, reports: "On the Bern District are 15 circuits, 84 preaching places, 17 traveling and 4 local preachers, and 21 other helpers. During the past year there were received 455 persons on trial, 238 into full membership, giving us 2,213 members, and 448 probationers; a net increase of 118. In our 56 Sunday schools are 5,310 children. It is a great pity that the children of parents who belong to the State Church must leave our Sunday schools when they are twelve or thirteen years old, to receive catechism instruction, with the result that they are often influenced Dy the clergy to oppose our Church. Three new chapels have been erected, and another is being built. The financial year has been a good one. Considerable debts remain on our chapels, and they press us hard, but we are better off than we would be if we had to rent expensive premises."

Norway.

THE Norway Mission was commenced in 1853 and organized as a Conference in 1876. It embraces the kingdom of Norway.

CONFERENCE SESSION.

The Norway Conference was held in Laurvig, Norway, July 27 to August 1, 1898, Bishop Walden presiding. Saren Sarenson was received on trial. Wahlstrom, Peter Olsen, and Nils Jonassen were superannuated preachers. The benevolent collections aggregated $1,540. During the year 365 children and adults were baptized. There are 64 local preachers, 47 churches, and 3 parsonages. The following were the appointments:

er our influence becomes the quicker the national Edman, Principal; P. F. Envall, Professor, in TheologChurch strives to adopt our methods, thereby making it more difficult for us to obtain an increase of membership. Our church debts are also a great hindrance, for much of our income must go to pay the interest, and in many cases it is hard work for both pastor and people. We have also some very small churches that make but little progress, have small resources, but demand considerable care and supervision. Also the spirit of the age is strong in Norway. It may be characterized by the words, lawlessness and spiritual indolence.' Religious indolence has its root in lawlessness. If the law is not acknowledged neither will God be acknowledged. Agnosticism takes the place of religious sentiment. Especially has this spirit taken hold of the young men. We have also had a constant decrease in the appropriations from the Missionary Society, and it has not been possible for us to get a corresponding increase of contributions from our churches, hence we were compelled to deduct 25 per cent from the salaries of our preachers the past year. Notwithstanding our hindrances we continue in faith our labors, for we have a great work to do as preachers of a full and free Gospel."
