The object of this little volume is to give an account of the activity of physicians in the field of general literature. It is impossible in a volume of this size to give more than an outline of the subject, and I have considered only the most prominent authors. Anything like a complete list would require several large volumes. I have frequently used selections which are used in Chambers' and in Cleveland's works on English literature, and here make acknowledgment.
