Thatcher's American Revolution.

The American Revolution; being rare and remarkable Passages of the History of the War of 1776. By B. B. THATCHER. 18mo, Muslin, 35 cents.

This is altogether the most pleasing of the productions of the late estimable and accomplished Mr. Thatcher, of Boston, whose Indian Biography is better known, yet, perhaps, scarcely inferior in merit to the above work.

Thatcher's Boston Tea Party.

Traits of the Boston Tea Party: being a Memoir of George R. T. Hewes, one of the last of its Survivors. With a History of that Transaction; Reminiscences of the Massacre and the Siege; and other Stories of Old Times. By B. B. THATCHER. Portrait. 18mo, Muslin, 62 cents.

Thatcher's Indian Biography.

Biography of Distinguished Indians; or, an Historical Account of those Individuals who have been distinguished among the North American Indians as Orators, Warriors, Statesmen, and other remarkable Characters. By B. B. THATCHER. Portrait of Red Jacket. 2 vols. 18mo, Muslin, 90 cents.

The extensive popularity of these biographies is one of the strongest evidences of their merit. Within a very few months after the publication a large edition was disposed of, and the work was established as a standard. Previous to their appearance there was no authentic or satisfactory account of the Indians. Notices of a few of the most distinguished among them in earlier times were to be found scattered through the pages of various historical works, but the number was very limited, and it might be said that all knowledge of their true character, and the traits for which they were renowned, existed only in oral tradition.

Thatcher's Indian Traits.

Indian Traits: being Sketches of the Manners, Customs, and Character of the North American Natives. By B. B. THATCHER. Engravings. 2 vols. 18mo, Muslin, 70 cents.

A work which will be valuable to the young, and to all who wish for a concise and just delineation of what is most desirable to be known respecting the character and customs of the natives of North America.

The American Poulterer's Companion.

A Practical Treatise on the Breeding, Rearing, Fattening, and general Management of the various Species of Domestic Poultry. By C. N. BEMENT. With Illustrations, and Portraits of Fowls taken from Life. 12mo, Muslin, $1 00.

A book that has already received hearty commendation from all quarters. Its new improvements entitle it still more strongly to general favor. Whoever raises poultry ought to procure it, as it would save him ten times its price every year.

Life of John Calvin.

Compiled from authentic Sources, and particularly from his Correspondence. By T. H. DYER. Portrait. 12mo, Muslin, $1 00.

Neal's Puritans.

History of the Puritans, or Protestant Non-conformists"; from the Reformation in 1518 to the Revolution in 1688; comprising an Account of their Principles, Sufferings, and the Lives and Characters of their most considerable Divines. By DANIEL NEAL, M.A. With Notes, by J. O. CHOULES, D.D. 2 vols. 8vo, Muslin, $2 75; Sheep extra, $3 00; Half Calf, $3 50. .

A valuable and interesting work developing the causes of the primitive settlement of the colonies of New England, and containing the most compendious view of the United States in their early provincial dependence which can be found. The history is judicious, impartial, and unimpeachably accurate and authentic. Few men possesssd more of the requisite qualifications for producing a work of this character than were enjoyed by Mr. Neal for ascertaining the whole truth upon the momentous subject which he describes.

Schiller's Thirty Years' War.

History of the Thirty Years' War. By FREDERICK SCHILLER. Translated from the German by the Rev. A. J. W. MORRISON. 12mo, Muslin, 45 cents.

A succinct and vivid insight into the religious wars of Germany during the fifteenth century, growing out of the great improvements of the Reformation era. It is replete with information of a period concerning which the religious community are now evincing unwonted interest.

Schiller's Revolt of the Netherlands.

History of the Revolt of the Netherlands; Trials and Execution of Counts Egmont and Horn, and the Siege of Antwerp. By FREDERICK SCHILLER. Translated from the German by the Rev. A. J. W. MORRISON, M.A.. 12mo, Muslin, 45 cents.

This esteemed work of Schiller portrays one of the most remarkable political events-the severing of the United Netherlands from the Spanish Crown-that can engage the student of history. The "Revolt of the Netherlands" has been pronounced an admirable work-as good, though not so well known, as the author's "Thirty Years' War." The memorable struggle with oppressive intolerance, detailed in the present work, ranks among those great crises that rendered the fifteenth century among the brightest of the world's epochs.

Life and Poems of Schiller.

By Sir E. BULWER LYTTON. 12mo, Muslin, 90 cents; Half Calf, $1 40.

Paulding's Washington.

Life of Washington. By JAMES K. PAULDING. Engraving. 2 vols. 18mo, Muslin, 90 cents.

No biographer of the "Father of his Country" has succeeded as well as Mr. Paulding in portraying the simplicity and grandeur of his character. The style of these volumes is appropriate to their subject-grave, dignified and earnest, as befits the memoirs of one of the noblest of soldiers, statesmen, and Christians.

Neander's Life of Christ.

Life of Christ; in its Historical Connection and its Historical Development. By AUGUSTUS NEANDER. Translated from the Fourth German Edition, by Professors M'CLINTOCK and BLUMENTHAL, of Dickinson College. 8vo, Muslin, $2 00; Sheep extra, $2 25. This great work of Dr. Neander's, now first translated, forms a necessary introduction to his General History of the Christian Religion and Church. Its reputation in Germany is too well known for it to need commendation here. Independently of its value as an antidote to the modern skeptical criticism, whether of the rationalistic or the mythical school, the work has taken its place as a standard authority on many points of chronology and interpretation, and is, indeed, regarded by many as the best commentary upon the four Gospels now extant. To those who have been accustomed only to expository works of the English school of theology, it will open an entirely new view of the life of the Savior, while, at the same time, its profound spirituality, breathing the very spirit of religion and humility, can not fail to render it as serviceable to the cause of practical holiness as of scientific theology.

Lieber's Great Events.

Great Events described by distinguished Historians, Chroniclers, and other Writers. By FRANCIS LIEBER, LL.D. A new Edition. 12mo, Muslin, 75 cents.

The compiler's design in this work is to afford means of forming strong character, awakening generous impulses, and invigorating the mind for future action, by encouraging an early familiarity with great events, and with those prominent men whose bold deeds and persevering exertions were crowned with lasting effects, or whose loftiness of purpose renders them inspiring examples. He has, therefore, brought together in this volume the record of fifteen great events, from the battle of Thermopyla, before Christ 480, to the siege of Saragossa, by Wellington, in 1808. The narrators of these events embrace many distinguished historiansHerodotus, Plato, Pliny, Gibbon, Bentivoglio, Southey, Napier, &c. The work is well conceived, and must be very useful.

Lieber on Property and Labor.

Essays on Property and Labor, as connected with Natural Law and the Constitution of Society. By F. LIEBER. With a Preliminary Essay, by Rev. Dr. POTTER. 18mo, Muslin, 45 cents. Letters like those contained in this volume are always seasonable. In this age, pre-eminently devoted to industrious enterprise, they are especially needed, and it is much to be desired that they may be widely circulated.

The Philosophy of Mystery.

By WALTER COOPER DENDY. 12mo, Muslin, 45 cents.

This is a book for the lovers of marvels and of mysteries. It contains an immense collection of anecdotes of spectral apparitions, of illusions of vision or of hearing, of striking phenomena exhibited in dreams, in insanity, in trance, or in magnetism, and furnishes many valuable hints to aid in the solution of these mysteries, by which so many have been bewildered or affrighted. It is written in a style of great ease and elegance, and can not fail to always have a very wide circle of readers.

Lives of Celebrated Travelers.

Containing Memoirs of William de Rubruquis, Marco Polo, Ibn Batuta, Leo Africanus, Pietro Della Valle, Jean Baptiste Tavernier, François Bernier, Sir John Chardin, Englebert Kæmpfer, Henry Maundrel, Joseph Pitton de Tournefort, Dr. Thomas Shaw, Frederic Hasselquist, Lady Wortley Montague, Richard Pococke, John Bell, John Ledyard, George Forster, James Bruce, Jonas Hanway, Antonio de Ulloa, Mungo Park, Peter Simon Pallas, Carsten Niebuhr, Choisseul-Gouffier, John Lewis Burkhardt, Volney, Edward Daniel Clarke, François le Vaillant, Belzoni, Dominique Vivant Denon, Reginald Heber. By JAMES A. ST. JOHN. 3 vols. 18mo, Muslin, $1 25.

These volumes comprise the lives of more than thirty of the most celebrated travelers, from the time of Rubruquis and Marco Polo, who brought back such strange stories about the Tartar Khans, down to the better-informed voyagers of our own days, who have undertaken to explore the still more mysterious countries of Central Africa. The reader will here find the substance of many ponderous volumes, to be met with only in great libraries-all the more valuable because of the omission of many trifling or unreliable facts.

History of the Bible.

By Rev. G. R. GLEIG. Map. 2 vols. 18mo, Muslin, 80 cents. Perhaps the most elaborate and able examination of the various objections urged against the Scriptures that has ever been written; and, at the same time, one of the clearest and most satisfactory expositions of the whole Bible, not only as the foundation of our faith, but also as a history. In the performance of his task, Mr. Gleig has exhibited equal piety and learning, and his work is calculated to facilitate, in a remarkable degree, both the comprehension and enjoyment of the inspired writings.

A True Story of the Battle of Waterloo.

By Rev. G. R. GLEIG. 12mo, Paper, 75 cents; Muslin, 90 cents. A very complete, pains-taking, well-arranged, and interesting narrative, embracing all the collateral points of the subject, as well as its main features. The arrangement, indeed, is its first excellence. We have never met with so complete and well-arranged a view of the "Story of the Hundred Days."-London Spectator. This account is instinct with spirit, and many are the striking and touching anecdotes which add to its interest. It is likely to become one of the most popular productions.-Literary Gazette.

The Juvenile Budget Opened;

being Selections from the Writings of Dr. JOHN AIKIN. Edited by Mrs. S. J. HALE. 18mo, Muslin, 37 cents.

His writings are the reflections of his spirit, and accordingly abound in all that refine and elevate. There is abundant evidence of this in this little volume.

The Juvenile Budget Reopened;

being further Selections from the Writings of Dr. JOHN AIKIN, with copious Notes. 18mo, Muslin, 37 cents.

His juvenile writings have exerted the widest and happiest influence, and should be the most highly cherished of all his productions.-Mrs. S. J. Hale.
