The volume is replete with interest, being the substance of six or seven large quarto, and several smaller volumes, and the compiler has very happily arranged the subject in a most attractive manner. Pitcairn's Island

and its Inhabitants. With an authentic Account of the Mutiny of the Ship Bounty, and of the subsequent Fortunes of the Mutineers. By Sir JOHN BARROW, F.R.S. 18mo, Muslin, 45 cents.

A portion of the crew of the English ship Bounty rose against their officers, and sent them adrift upon the sea in an open boat. The mutineers, with a number of native women, at length took possession of an uninhabited island, and in the course of a year or two almost all of them perished in quarrels among themselves. The sole survivor of the mutineers now repented of his evil courses, and became the religious instructor of the native women and their children. After many years the island was accidentally visited by an English vessel, who found the inhabitants grown up into a well-ordered community. This volume narrates the perilous adventures of the officers who were put adrift, and the conduct of the mutineers and their peaceful descendants. The whole story is full of interest.

Two Years Before the Mast.

A Personal Narrative of Life at Sea. By R. H. DANA, Jr. 18mo, Muslin, 45 cents.

The author of this work is now an eminent lawyer of Boston. Some years ago he shipped as a sailor before the mast on board a vessel bound to California for a cargo of hides. His account of a sailor's every-day life is the most graphic and accurate any where to be found. The British Government were so sensible of the rare merits of this volume, that they caused it to be reprinted in England, and distributed a large edition gratuitously among the sailors. The voyage was made long before the discovery of gold in California; and it is not a little curious to compare the present condition of that country with the aspect it formerly presented.
