Narrative of a Journey round the World.

Comprising a Winter Passage across the Andes to Chili; with a Visit to the Gold Regions of California and Australia, the South Sea Islands, Java, &c. By F. GERSTAECKER. 12mo, Muslin, $1 00. A very entertaining and instructive narrative of personal adventure and experience during a journey of five years. It contains descriptions of the manners and customs of different portions of South America; graphic accounts of society and life in California, shortly after the discovery of gold there; notices of life in the Sandwich and Society Islands; the incidents of a residence in Australia; and adventures in Java. This is one of the pleasantest and most readable of recent books of travel, covering ground which has not been so fully and satisfactorily treated in any other publication.

Home Influence.

A Tale for Mothers and Daughters. By GRACE AGUILAR, 12mo, Muslin, 37 cents.

A beautiful story, presenting a lovely, quiet picture of home feelings and manners toned down to a deep, tender sweetness, peculiarly fitted to the fireside of the domestic circle. The book is full of natural purity, scenes of every-day life, and feelings of real every-day people.

The Mother's Recompense.

Stansbury's Interest Tables at Seven per Cent.

Calculated by Months and Days, and by current Days at the rates of 360 and 365 to the Year. Decimally arranged under the head of Time. Each Period of less than a Year having a separate Table by Months and Days, and Days as 360ths, contained on the third of a Page; a Table for a Year being repeated on each two Pages under observation at the same time. Each Day up to 146 having also a separate Table, at 365 to the Year; with a Table of 146 Days, repeated like the Year Table. Together with Factors for calculating Rebate or Discount; and also convenient Time Tables. Royal 8vo, Half Bound, $1 50.

Simplicity of arrangement, accuracy of calculation, and compactness of form commend this work to all who have occasion to refer to such tables. It is true of most interest tables that a ready accountant will ascertain the interest on any sum by the old-fashioned method of computation in as little time as the several pages of the table-book can be referred to, and the several amounts added together, and the result thus obtained. Stansbury's tables, however, present on one page the interest on any sum which it may be necessary to find.

Crowe's History of France.

These valuable Commentaries combine a just proportion of the devotional with the critical. The first rank among Biblical critics has been assigned to Albert Barnes. His fame has become European. "I know of no Commentary," says the Rev. Dr. Cumming, of England, "so succinct, full, and impartial. It is fitted to instruct the preacher no less than the Sunday-school teacher. It seems to be his grand effort to unveil solely what 'the Spirit saith to the churches.' I venture to predict that his faithful and lucid comments will find a response in the minds, hearts, and consciences of most Christian readers."

Pursuit of Knowledge under Difficulties;

its Pleasures and Rewards. Illustrated by Memoirs of eminent Men. By GEORGE L. CRAIK. 2 vols. 18mo, Muslin, 90 cents.

Pursuit of Knowledge under Difficulties.

Same Work revised, with Notes and a Preface, by Rev. Dr. WAYLAND, President of Brown University. From larger Type than the foregoing Edition. Portraits. 2 vols. 12mo, Muslin, $1 50. This work was originally compiled for the London Society for the Diffusion of Useful knowledge, and consists of brief sketches of a large number of personages who have risen to eminence in the various walks of life, from humble circumstances, and with no other aid than that supplied by their own inherent energies. It is an admirable book for the thoughtful study of the young, and abounds in lessons of perseverance, patience, and hope, which can not be too frequently or profoundly pondered. The notes and hints of Dr. Wayland display the wisdom and sense for which he is conspicuous. The authorship of the work is ascribed to Mr. G. L. Craik, one of the editors of the Pictorial History of England.

Dr. Olin's Travels.

Travels in Egypt, Arabia Petræa, and the Holy Land. 12 Engravings. 2 vols. 8vo, Muslin, $2 50.

Dr. Olin's excellent volumes convey a great amount of information. They are remarkably accurate, and contain the best account of Egypt that has appeared in this country-perhaps in the language. "The work," says Bishop Potter, "is rich in information, pervaded by a lofty spirit, and entitled to entire confidence."

Dr. Olin's Works.

The Works of STEPHEN OLIN, D.D., late President of the Wesleyan University. 2 vols. 12mo, Muslin, $2 00.

Dr. Olin's style is forcible and his manner earnest, while his language is suggestive and full of thought. Strength and clearness of reasoning, aptness of illustration, and a straightforward purpose are always to be detected in his sermons. The lectures and addresses in the second volume are mostly devoted to topics connected with Christian education. The author's large and comprehensive views of this important subject were both developed and modified by the experience of a quarter of a century, during which he was brought in contact with students of great diversity of mental and moral structure.

Dr. Olin's Life and Letters.

2 vols. 12mo, Muslin, $200.

The biography of such a man can not be other than a public benefaction. Its effect must be as salutary as the character of its subject was unworldly and pure. In the present case, the interest of the work is greatly enhanced by the space that is allotted to the correspondence of President Olin, whose letters form almost a connective autobiography.

Irving's Columbus.

Life of Christopher Columbus. By WASHINGTON IRVING. A new Edition, revised by the Author. With a Portrait of the Great Navigator, and a Map. 12mo, Muslin, 75 cents.

This is one of the works which are the delight of readers and the despair of critics. It is as nearly perfect as any work can be. Its attraction lies in the charm of finished elegance, which it never loses. The most harmonious and poetical words are carefully selected. Every period is measured and harmonized with the nicest precision.

Life of Oliver Goldsmith;

with Selections from his Writings. By WASHINGTON IRVING. Portrait. 2 vols. 18mo, Muslin, 90 cents.

Lives of Columbus and Vespucius.

The Lives of Christopher Columbus, the Discoverer of America, and Americus Vespucius, the Florentine, Engravings. 18mo, Muslin, 37 cents.

In a single volume are here presented the lives of the discoverer of America and of the Florentine navigator, who has given his name to the Western Continent. Taken in connection, they form a narrative of the interesting vicissitude which abounded during the whole career of these distinguished navigators, and furnish abundant grounds for forming an opinion upon their respective merits.

Hallam's Constitutional History of England,

From the Accession of Henry VII. to the Death of George II. 8vo, Sheep extra, $1 75; Half Calf, $2 00.

Mr. Hallam is far better qualified than any other writer of our times for the task he has accomplished. He has great industry and great acuteness; his knowledge is extensive, various, and profound; his mind is equally distinguished by the amplitude of its grasp and by the delicacy of its touch. On a general survey, we do not scruple to pronounce the "Constitutional History" the most important book that we ever read.-Macaulay.

This is a production of the greatest value, and distinguished, like his other works, for research, judgment, taste, and elegance.-Chancellor Kent.

Hallam's Literature.

This edition will naturally find its way into all libraries. No work on foreign history or politics can be more instructive or useful to American statesmen. Edinburgh Review pronounces it "the most important contribution to literary history received for many years ;" and a writer in the London Quarterly Review says, To all lovers of literature it will be acceptable; to the young, we conceive, invaluable. We almost wish that we could renew our own youth, in order to profit by its instructions: it would have prevented us from reading a vast number of very bad books, and induced us, perhaps, to read some good ones.

Hallam's Middle Ages.

State of Europe during the Middle Ages. By HENRY HALLAM. 8vo, Sheep extra, $1 75; Half Calf, $2 00.

The object of this work is to trace the progress of Europe from the middle of the fifth to the end of the fifteenth century; from the establishment of Clovis in Gaul to the invasion of Italy by Charles the Eighth. The plan of this work is more extensive than that of Robertson's, its views more comprehensive, and its information more copious and critical. It is written throughout with a spirit of freedom and liberality that does credit to the author.

Hallam's Historical Works:

comprising the above. 4 vols. 8vo, uniformly bound in Sheep extra, $7 00; Half Calf, $8 00.

Balboa, Cortez, and Pizarro.

The Lives of Vasco Nunez de Balboa, the Discoverer of the Pacific Ocean; Hernando Cortez, the Conqueror of Mexico; and Francisco Pizarro, the Conqueror of Peru. 18mo, Muslin, 37+ cents.

There is a singular fitness in presenting, in a single volume, the lives of Balboa, the first European who ever looked upon the waters of the broad Pacific; Cortez, the bold and determined conqueror of Mexico; and Pizzarro, the sanguinary destroyer of the empire of the Incas in Peru. The reader who follows the current of these narratives can not fail to obtain a just notion of the untiring efforts, desperate struggles, and barbarous cruelties which attended the conquest by the Spaniards of the southern portion of this continent.

Lamartine's Girondists.

History of the Girondists; or, Personal Memoirs of the Patriots From unpub

of the French Revolution. By A. DE LAMARTINE.

lished Sources. 3 vols. 12mo, Muslin, $2 10; Half Calf, $3 60. The Girondists were the moderate party during the latter part of the French Revolution who vainly endeavored to check the excesses of the Jacobins, and fell victims in the unsuccessful effort. Many of them were men of the most brilliant talents and of lofty virtue. The story of their struggles and their destruction forms one of the most exciting episodes of modern history. Lamartine has done full justice to his stirring theme. His style is brilliant and captivating combining the interest of a romance with the instruction of history.

Lamartine's Constituent Assembly.

By ALPHONSE DE

History of the Constituent Assembly (1785). LAMARTINE, Author of the "Girondists," &c. "Having descended the course of time, even to our own days, in the history of theGirondists' and that of the Restoration,' I shall now retrace my steps through those years, so full of events and so rapid in their flight, to recount the history of the first French national union, which has been especially designated the Constituent Assembly.' This meeting of men, deliberating on the ruins of a worn-out monarchy, was the secular council of reason, the focus of ideas, the echo of speech, the arm of public opinion, brought to the discussion and promulgation of modern creeds with reference to society and the government of nations."-The Author.

The essence of many volumes is here condensed and reproduced in the fascinating style of which Lamartine is such a great master. The subjects of the volumes are Nelson-Heloise-Columbus Palissy the Potter-Roostam-Cicero-Jacquard-Joan of Arc-Cromwell-Homer-Gutenberg-Fenelon-Socrates. air of beauty is thrown around them all. Whatever is romantic in their histories is set forth with consummate artistic skill, and a fresh and beautiful light is made to play on old facts. The Life of Nelson is, perhaps, the hardest one for a Frenchman, and, above all, for Lamartine, to write justly-and yet it is most admirably done. He portrays the mingled strength and weakness of his character with a master hand, and condenses and narrates the leading events of his life in a story of thrilling intertest.

Lamartine's Past and Present.

Past, Present, and Future of the Republic. 12mo, Muslin, 50 cents.

Lamartine's Raphael;

or, Pages from the Book of Life at Twenty. By ALPHONSE DE LAMARTINE. 12mo, Paper, 25 cents.

An extraordinary book; pronounced by eminent critics the chef d'œuvre of the poet, and supposed to be the history of his own early struggles and aspirations. The book is written in admirable style, spirited, poetic, and glowing with the warmth of actual life.
