The Knout and the Russians;

or, the Muscovite Empire, the Czar, and his People. By GERMAIN DE LAGNY. With numerous Illustrations. 12mo, Muslin, $1 00.

A complete sketch of Russia, full of facts worked up into a very readable form. The author seems well acquainted with his subject, and was evidently connected with Russia some time. He presents a detailed and very lively description of the interior of Russian society, with a lucid exposition of the prominent public institutions. The author's chapters on the army, the nobility, the clergy, the navy, the magistracy, and the finances, are informing and valuable.

The Chinese Insurrection.

A History of the Insurrection in China; with Notices of the Christianity, Creed, and Proclamations of the Insurgents. By Dr. YVAN and M. CALLERY. And a Supplementary Account of the most recent Events. Edited by JOHN OXENFORD.

With Facsimile of Chinese Map and Portrait of the Insurgent Chief. 12mo, Muslin, 75 cents.

The Revolution in China is, in all respects, the greatest revolution the world has yet seen. The account of it, as given by Messrs. Yvan and Callery, is spirited, picturesque, and amusing. The actual knowledge of the Chinese which their experience has given them is shown throughout the work. The narrative is animated by traits of Chinese manners, opinions, and ideas, as well as by lively reminiscences of the country, and some of the actors, with whom, the authors were perfectly acquainted.

Grote's History of Greece.

12 vols. 12mo, Muslin, 75 cents per Volume; Half Calf, $15 00 per Set.

This great work, on which Mr. Grote has so long been engaged, is at length brought to a close. Long meditated, patiently elaborated, and accompanied at each stage with applause and expectation, it will probably never be superseded. It is at once an ample and detailed narrative of the history of Greece, and a lucid philosophy of Grecian history, and is destined to a permanent reputation.

Memoirs of Abernethy.

Memoirs of John Abernethy, F.R.S. With a View of his Writings, Lectures, and Character. By GEORGE MACILWAIN, F.R.S. 12mo, Muslin, $1 00.

This volume will be read with lively interest far beyond the circle of merely professional readers. Abernethy, while living, became known most widely by the circulation of characteristic anecdotes of his intercourse with patients. But they revealed only one side of his extraordinary character, and the amusing play of his wit and tact; we have here, in a popular form, better means of appreciating his great ability and distinguished character as a man of science, a teacher, and a practitioner. The author writes as a pupil and a friend, with a vigorous and free pen. It is a very instructive, as well as lively and amusing book.

It is unnecessary at this day to eulogize the works of Miss Edgeworth-they have taken an enduring position in English literature. Sir Walter Scott, with his characteristic frankness, has acknowledged that his original idea when he commenced his career as a novelist, was to be to Scotland what Miss Edgeworth was to Ireland-to portray the peculiarities of manners belonging rather to the generation passing away than to that which now exists, and to give life to the natural scenery, and permanence to the national characteristics of his countrymen.

In depicting the strange varieties of Irish character, whether grave or gay, Miss Edgeworth is confessedly without an equal. Her comic and playful satire ranks her high in the dominions of humor, while it is combined with a sterling common sense, and a power of picturesque description which seldom fall to the lot of the wit or the satirist. Her story-telling powers are admirable.

The whole of the works, as published in this edition, have undergone a careful revision and correction by the author herself.

Miss Edgeworth's Frank.

Engravings. 2 vols. 18mo, Muslin, 90 cents.

Miss Edgeworth has, in this work, endeavored to convey to the minds of youth important truths through the medium of sprightly and entertaining stories. The beauty and importance of self-control, self-denial, decision, and perseverance, are clearly illustrated by a variety of interesting incidents.

Miss Edgeworth's Moral Tales.

2 vols. 18mo, Muslin, 75 cents.

Miss Edgeworth's Popular Tales.

Engravings. 2 vols. 18mo, Half Bound, 75 cents.

A series of tales intended to convey moral instruction in an attractive form. Miss Edgeworth's tales are among the best ever written for this purpose. It is impossible to read one of them without feeling that they were intended and are calculated to soften dispositions, correct errors, and remove prejudices; while they are so full of interest, merely as tales, as to gain and hold the attention of the most careless reader.

This work is one of the most interesting in historical literature. It is second, in importance and value to no series of original works ever printed in this country. Mr. Sparks's labors can not be too highly estimated. His researches have been prosecuted with untiring diligence, and with such success that almost every question within their scope has been definitively settled. The great merits of Mr. Sparks are reverence for truth, soundness of judgment in regard to evidence, and exhausting fullness of detail and illustration.-Griswold's Prose Writers.

This cheap and handsome edition of the works of Mrs. SHERWOOD is certainly one of the most admirable family series, from the pen of a single writer, in the English language. The subjects are exceedingly various, and adapted to different degrees of capacity, from that of opening youth to the matured intellect of riper years; but in all, the sentiments, the spirit, and the influence upon the mind, are such as to command the warmest approbation of every enlightened Christian; while, in their aptitude for the cultivation of the understanding and the improvement of the heart, they challenge competition. These features render the works of Mrs. SHERWOOD peculiarly suitable for the libraries of Sunday-schools.

The Principles of Courtesy.

With Hints and Observations on Manners and Habits. By GEORGE WINFRED HERVEY. A new Edition, with Additions and Corrections. 12mo, Muslin, 75 cents.

The design of this work is to illustrate and enforce the duty of courtesy in all its principles and applications. From the opinions of the leading critics of the day, already laid before the public, we gather that the book is unique, original, and, apart from the very important practical theme of which it treats, a curiosity in the literature of the age. The subjects, they tell us, are discussed in a spirit of cheerful, charitable, and liberal ethics.

The Rhetoric of Conversation

;

or, Bridles and Spurs for the Management of the Tongue. GEORGE WINFRED HERVEY. 12mo, Muslin, 75 cents.

By

This volume is intended to be of the same use to all who talk, as the ordinary works on rhetoric are to public speakers and to writers; containing all the instruction as to the proprieties and ethics of talking that the aspirant after colloquial excellence can reasonably require. To the great number of critical judgments in regard to this work which have appeared in the United States, we may be allowed to add one from the London Literary Gazette, a periodical which, according to Christopher North, "stands, beyond dispute, at the head of its own class." "In this volume, by an American writer, will be found much sensible and entertaining counsel and illustrations, historical and biographical. On the art and ethics of talking, it is a comprehensive manual, and no book in the English language has entered so systematically into the subject, and presented so many striking and appropriate hints for practical use."

Cooper's Surgical Dictionary.

A Dictionary of Practical Surgery, comprehending all the most interesting Improvements, an Account of the Instruments and Remedies employed in Surgery, the Etymology and Signification of the principal Terms, &c. With numerous Notes and Additions, derived from the Practice of American Surgeons, together with a Supplementary Index, in which the Science of Surgery is brought down to the present Period, by DAVID M. REESE, M.D., LL.D. 8vo, Sheep extra, $3 00.

Cooper's Surgical Dictionary, with the voluminous notes and extensive supplementary Appendix of the American editor, which the venerable author incorporated in his latest London edition, is not only the standard authority in surgery in every college at home and abroad, but, as a book of reference in this science, can never be supplanted by any of the kindred works on the same subject, all of which give evidence that their learned authors have been obliged to draw largely from this great Cyclopædia of Surgery for their authorities, their doctrines, and their facts. The name of Samuel Cooper and his work will be coeval with surgery, so long as this science is cultivated among men.

Stewart on the Diseases of Children.

8vo, Muslin, $1 50; Sheep extra, $1 75.

A newly revised and cheap edition of a well-known and important production, which has so long enjoyed the highest repute among the profession, and will now, no doubt, become equally popular as a work of reference with families.
