The work is rich in sketches of contemporary literary men and politicians, presenting, in fact, a lucid commentary on the development of German culture during the last half century.

Parisian Sights and French Principles,

seen through American Spectacles. With Illustrations. Muslin, $1 00.

12mo,

This is one of the most graphic descriptions of life in the French metropolis which have yet been given by any English or American traveler. The author blends reflection and narrative in a very effective manner, depicting the prominent features of French society with a vivid pencil, and deducing the inferences suggested by his varied experience. Short of a personal visit to the great focus of European fashion, there is no way in which one can obtain such a mass of information on the subject, and in so agreeable a manner, as by reading this lively volume.

American Missionary Memorial:

including Biographical and Historical Sketches. Edited by H. PIERSON, A.M. With numerous Illustrations. 12mo, Muslin, $1 75; Muslin, gilt edges, $2 00; Morocco extra, gilt edges, $5.00.

A work devoted to the memory of American missionaries. It is introduced with a historical essay ftom the pen of the Rev. Dr. WORCESTER, of Salem, Massachusetts, describing the origin of American missions, and presenting many val uable reminiscences of the pioneers in that sacred enterprise. The biographies of the deceased missionaries of various Christian denominations are here given by writers well qualified to do justice to the task. In a religious point of view, the volume possesses remarkable interest, and, irrespective of this, it must attract the attention of the general reader, because it opens a new chapter in the history of American enterprise.

Layard's Nineveh.

A Popular Account of the Discoveries at Nineveh. By AUSTEN HENRY LAYARD. Abridged by him from his larger Work. With numerous Wood Engravings. 12mo, Muslin, 75 cents.

The London Examiner pronounces this a "charming volume, to which we may safely promise a circulation without limit, and as unbounded popularity. The great feature of the abridgement is, the introduction of the principal Biblical and historical illustrations (forming a separate section of the original work) into the narrative, which, without sacrificing any matter of importance, makes the story more compact, useful, and, indeed, complete in its abridged than it was in its original form."

Layard's Fresh Discoveries.

Fresh Discoveries in Nineveh and Babylon; with Travels in Armenia, Kurdistan, and the Desert: being the Result of a Second Expedition, undertaken for the Trustees of the British Museum. By AUSTEN HENRY LAYARD, M.P. With all of the Maps and Engravings in the English Edition. 8vo, Muslin, $2 25. This deeply interesting volume describes the result of a second expedition, devoted to exploring the remains of the ruined cities of the East. The discoveries are related with graphic beauty, and are equally striking with those before published, and throw new light on many obscure passages of Holy Writ, as well as on the social and domestic characteristics of numerous Oriental regions, concerning which we know comparatively little.

Interviews, Memorable and Useful.

From Diary and Memory Reproduced. By Rev. Dr. SAMUEL H. Cox. 12mo, Muslin, $1 00.

Dr. Cox has here presented to the public personal reminiscences, describing scenes and conversations with various distinguished personages in which he took part, and accompanied with appropriate reflections and inferences in the peculiar vein of humor which has given the author so much celebrity.

Countess D'Arbouville's Tales.

Christine van Amberg, Resignation, and the Village Doctor. By the Countess D'ARBOUVILLE. Translated from the French, by MAUNSELL B. FIELD, M.A. 12mo, Muslin, 75 cents.

The present tales, entitled "Christine Van Amberg," Resignation," and "The Village Doctor," are scarcely inferior to Paul and Virginia in tenderness and pathos. Free from the unnatural sentiment and immoral tendencies of a large portion of modern French romance, they exhiblt an inimitable portraiture of refined and beautiful passion, in a style of singular sweetness, simplicity, and power.

The Bourbon Prince.

The History of the Royal Dauphin, Louis XVII. of France. Numerous Engravings. 16mo, Muslin, 62 cents.

This little work gives the history of the Royal Dauphin, Louis XVII., of France. The account of his brief, eventful life possesses the charm of a romance in the touching beauty and tragic pathos of its narrative.

Sir William Hamilton's Works.

Discussions on Philosophy and Literature, Education and University Reform. Chiefly from the Edinburgh Review. Corrected, vindicated, enlarged, in Notes and Appendices. 8vo, Muslin, $1 50; Half Calf, $2 00.

In the present state of metaphysical inquiry, the writings of Sir William Hamilton are indispensable for reference, if not for authority. The portion of the volume relating to education possesses the greatest interest for the general reader, while the student of the history of philosophy will find in the papers devoted to that subject an overflowing treasury of learning, ample quotations from writers eminent in their day, but now little read, and a store of critical suggestions. The present edition is prefaced by an appropriate Essay by Robert Turnbull, D.D., presenting a luminous view of the progress of philosophical speculation from the dawn of philosophy among the nations of the East to its latest developments in Continental Europe.

Memorials of the English Martyrs.

By Rev. C. B. TAYLER. Beautifully Illustrated. 12mo, Muslin, $1.00.

Among the places to which he made a pious pilgrimage, Smithfield, Lutterworth, Gloucester, and Oxford are most conspicuous.

History of Sandford and Merton.

BY THOMAS DAY. 18mo, Half Bound, 37 cents.

This well-known and popular work has been read by many a boy with delight and instruction, and will continue to communicate equal delight to those that are to follow. It was the object of the author to convey to the youthful mind such useful impressions as were calculated to promote the formation of a generous, a contented, and a manly character; and it is even more adapted to the state of society at present than it was at the period when it was written.

Beauchesne's Louis XVII.

His Life, his Suffering, his Death: the Captivity of the Royal Family in the Temple. Translated and Edited by W. HAZLITT, Esq. Embellished with Vignettes, Autographs, and Plans. vols. 12mo, Muslin, $200.

2

A complete English translation, presenting a full history of the unfortunate Dauphin, from his birth to his imprisonment in the Temple, and his subsequent death. The author is an earnest partisan of the old French monarchy; the horrors of the Revolution have acted powerfully upon his imagination; he is alive to every romantic element in the fortunes of the falling dynasty; but he has evidently investigated his subject with discrimination and good faith; no circumstance, however trivial, is permitted to escape his attention; and, writing with united judgment and enthusiasm, he has produced a narrative of rare beauty, as well as touching pathos.

A Second Visit to the United States.

Gell, Jekyll, &c., &c.; as well as letters from the most eminent statesmen and foreigners of distinction-the Duke of Wellington, Marquis Wellesley, Marquis Douro, Lords Lyndhurst, Brougham, Durham, Abinger, &c., &c.

Maury's Geography of the Sea.

The Physical Geography of the Sea. By M. F. MAURY, Lieut. U. S. Navy. With Wood cuts and Charts. 8vo, Muslin, $1 25. A philosophical account of the winds and currents of the ocean-of its depth and temperature, of the wonders that are hidden in its bosom, and of the phenomena that are exhibited at its surface. The economy of the sea and its adaptations its salts, its waters, its inhabitants-also pertain to the subject, and are amply treated in the present volume. The discussion, it will be perceived, is of a unique character, and opens details that are rarely touched in the records of science. In the hands of Lieutenant Maury it assumes a popular interest, no less than scientific importance. His descriptions of the phenomena of the Gulf Stream, of the currents of the sea, and other cognate topics, are singularly graphic in their style, besides containing a rich fund of curious and valuable information. It is rarely that a treatise on any branch of physical science is so attractive in its details or so fruitful in its instructions as this volume. It can not fail to awaken universal interest and admiration.

Bulwer's Novels.

To Bulwer, the author of Pelham, The Caxtons, and My Novel, we assign the highest place among modern writers of fiction. There is always power in the creations of his fancy; he is always polished, witty, learned. Since the days of Scott were ended, there is, in our apprehension, no pinnacle so high as that on which we hang our wreath to Bulwer: like the Roman emperor, a prince among his equals, the first of his craft.-Blackwood's Magazine.
