Russell's Modern Europe.

History of Modern Europe, with a View of the Progress of Society, from the Rise of Modern Kingdoms to the Peace of Paris in 1763. By W. RUSSELL. With a Continuance of the History, by WM. JONES. Engravings. 3 vols. 8vo, Sheep, $4 50; Half Calf, $5.50.

The history of modern Europe, by Dr. Russell, has always been prized for its comprehensiveness. It includes the most important period in the annals of mankind, as the author's narrative introduces the era when the renovation of society commenced, after the protracted continuance of that mental gloom which, during several centuries, covered the civilized world. Says Chambers of this work, "It is a production at once so succinct, yet so perspicuous, comprehensive, and entertaining, that all rivalry appears to be precluded."

The established reputation of this valuable series of American biography has long imparted to it a high authority. Derived from accredited, in many instances from rare and inaccessible sources, Dr. Belknap's work will ever be regarded as of great historical value. The sympathy excited by the story of her beauty and her misfortune is now heightened by the assurance of her wrongs. Mr. Bell's is considered the most effective, as well as the most impartial life that has been written, next to the one in Miss Strickland's admirable work, "The Queens of Scotland," described in another part of this Catalogue.

Uncle Philip's Evidences of Christianity;

or, Conversations about the Truth of the Christian Religion. 18mo, Muslin, 35 cents.

In this excellent little work a very difficult task has been undertaken, and successfully accomplished-that of making both attractive and intelligible to the minds of the young the great and striking evidences by which the truth of our Divine religion is established. The manner in which the subject is treated is both novel and ingenious; and so much of narrative is mingled with the argument as to make it not only impressive, but highly interesting.

Uncle Philip's Natural History;

or, Conversations with the Children about Tools and Trades among the Inferior Animals. Engravings. 18mo, Muslin, 35

cents.

This work deserves high praise. It displays much tact and ingenuity, guided by sound judgment, and controlled by fervent piety. Such books for the young are scarce, and likely to be so; for few are able to produce them. Children will delight in it, and profit by it.-The Churchman.

Uncle Philip's Virginia ;

or, Conversations with the Children about the History of Virginia. With numerous Engravings. 18mo, Muslin, 35 cents. Uncle Philip is deservedly a great favorite. He tells his stories in a lively, agreeable manner, always watching for an opportunity to drop a word of wise counsel, which, coming at the right time, sinks as deeply into the heart as the most affecting incident of the story. The present work contains the history of Virginia, from the first attempts of the colony to the time of its independence, embracing the tragic story of Smith and Pocahontas. The book is suitable for family and district libraries.

Uncle Philip's New York;

or, Conversations with the Children about the History of New York. With numerous Engravings. 2 vols. 18mo, Muslin, 70 cents.

Uncle Philip's New Hampshire;

or, Conversations with the Children about the History of New Hampshire. With numerous Engravings, 2 vols. 18mo, Muslin, 70 cents.

Uncle Philip's Massachusetts;

or, Conversations with the Children about the History of Massachusetts. With numerous Engravings. 2 vols. 18mo, Muslin, 70

cents.

cents.

Uncle Philip's American Forest ;

or, Conversations with the Children about the Trees of America. Engravings. 18mo, Muslin, 35 cents.

The productions of Uncle Philip are all distinguished for that familiar, easy style of composition so peculiarly adapted to children, and which conveys information through a channel so pleasing as to make its acquisition a recreation rather than a task. The mind is entertained at the same time that it is enlightened, and the child has its amusement within the compass of its studies.

Uncle Philip's Whale Fishery;

or, Conversations with the Children about the Whale Fishery and the Polar Seas. 2 vols. 18mo, Muslin, 70 cents.

Waddington's Church History.

History of the Church, from the earliest Ages to the Reformation. By Rev. GEORGE WADDINGTON, M.A. 8vo, Muslin, $1 75.

The work was expressly written for and published by the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowlepge, a sufficient guarantee for value and soundness of opinion, even had not the amazing sale of above one hundred thousand copies in England given it the surest proof of general approbation. It is recognized generally by theologians as most clear, accurate, and comprehensive; and the arrangement is esteemed particularly judicious.

Biographical History of Congress :

comprising Memoirs of Members of the Congress of the United States, together with a History of Internal Improvements, from the Foundation of the Government to the present Time. By HENRY G. WHEELER. With Portraits and Fac-simile Autographs. 2 vols. 8vo, Muslin, $3 00 per Volume.

It is the design of the above work to present a series of biographical sketches of the members of Congress, divested of party bias, and drawn from authentic sources; thus embodying in a succinct and attractive form much of the contemporary history and political progress of the country. The absence of any permanent and accredited record of the actions and personal traits of those who have contributed to the national advancement has been the subject of frequent regret; and it is to this cause that the above literary enterprise owes its origin. From its extended range of interest, it will be found a work essential to the completeness of every gentleman's library.

The Philosophy of Living;

or, the Way to enjoy Life and its Comforts. By CALEB TICK NOR, A.M., M.D. Engravings. 18mo. Muslin, 45 cents.

This little work, as its title designates, is upon the science of living, or living well, being composed of dissertations upon diet, dress, occupation, and amusements. It is written in a frank, open style, with considerable energy, and many of the vices of the age are lashed with unsparing severity.

Smith's Consular Cities of China.

A Narrative of an Exploratory Visit to each of the Consular Cities of China, and to the Islands of Hong Kong and Chusan, in behalf of the Church Missionary Society, in the Years 1844-46. By Rev. G. SMITH. 12mo, Muslin, $1 25.

The primary object of this interesting narrative of a tour among the newly. opened cities of China has been to explore the ground, and exhibit the real condition of the country at the present day. The work is especially valuable as supplying important data for rightly estimating the moral, social, and political condition of that peculiar people. In addition to the above, Mr. Smith's connection with the existing British missionary operations in the Chinese Empire has enabled him to collect a valuable store of information respecting that interesting religious enterprise. The embellishments to the work are unusually effective, novel, and interesting.

It is not confined to the mere exploits and adventures of the Macedonian hero, but contains a masterly view of the times in which he lived, and of the manners, customs, &c., of the Greeks, Persians, Arabs, and Indians, and other nations whom he conquered or visited. The whole story is told in a manner calculated to stimulate the curiosity and rouse the reflection of the reader.
