Beck's Botany of the United States.

The Botany of the United States, north of Virginia; comprising Descriptions of Flowering and Fern-like Plants hitherto found in those States, arranged according to the Natural System. With a Synopsis of the Genera according to the Linnæan System, a Sketch of the Rudiments of Botany, &c. By LEWIS C. BECK, 12mo, Muslin, $1 25; Sheep, $1 50.

This work contains scientific and popular descriptions of the flowering and fernlike plants found in the United States north of Virginia, with their English names, brief notices of their uses, &c. The arrangement is according to the natural system, which the author introduced to the notice of American botanists in the first edition, published several years since, and which is now generally adopted. But in order to secure all the advantages of the Linnæan system, a synopsis of the genera in accordance with it is prefixed, containing references to the natural orders, and to the page where the species are described. And, fully to carry out the design of the work, and to render it as well a class-book for the beginner as a convenient manual for the more advanced botanist, there have also been added a sketch of the rudiments of botany, a glossary of botanical terms, and a table explanatory of the Linnæan classes and orders.

Lives of the Apostles

and early Martyrs of the Church. Engravings. 18mo, Muslin, 25 cents.

The style is beautifully simple, and the narrative is interspersed with comments and reflections remarkable for their devout spirit, and for the clearness with which they elucidate whatever might appear to the mind either contradictory or unintelligible. It is impossible for any child to read these affecting histories without becoming interested; and the interest is so directed and improved as to implant and foster the purest principles of religion and morality.

Uncle John;

or, "It is too much Trouble." BY MARY ORME. 18mo, Muslin, 37 cents.

This little work will be read with deep interest and profit by all. The plot of the story is simple, and the incidents belong to the region of fact rather than of fancy; but the truthfulness of its description, its masterly delineations of character, and the liveliness of its style, render it highly piquant and agreeable, while the clearness with which it inculcates certain weighty truths, must commend it to the attention of all who desire the infusion of a truer spirit into the details of everyday life.

Temper and Temperament;

or, Varieties of Character. By Mrs. ELLIS. 18mo, Muslin, 45 cents. Mrs. Ellis is one of the most popular female writers of the day. As a work of systematic theology, this has no equal in the language. The admirable arrangement, the clear and eloquent style, the masterly and profound argument, and the spirit of piety and reverence which characterize its pages, have long since given it a character in this country and England that no other treatise has obtained. Dr. Dwight's fame is more widely extended than that of any other American divine, with perhaps the exception of Edwards. His discourses are familiar to theologians wherever the English language is spoken,

A Diatesseron, or combination of the Gospel narratives into one unbroken story, such as is here attempted, can not fail of interesting Christians of every class; concentrating, as it does, into one view the various inspired accounts of the life and actions of the Great Source of all their hopes. In the arrangement of the events, the compiler has consulted the best harmonists. The work, therefore, possesses additional value on this account.
