And the newly elected Senators came forward and took and subscribed the oath of office, which was administered by the Lieutenant Governor.

ELECTION OF OFFICERS.

On motion of Senator Pratt,

The Senate proceeded to the election of Chief Clerk,
The roll being called, with the following result:

Senators Belden Cameron, Colladay, Davis, Flint, Foster, Griswold, Hill, Hazelton, Jones, Little, Magoon, Miner, Pettit, Pratt, Price, Strong, Town and Williams-19, voting for O, R. Smith.

Senators Baldwin, Burchard, Clark, Deuster, Hucbschman, Ives, Krouskop, Morgan, Reed, Rice, Schmidt, Walker and Woodman-13, voting for A. B. Braley.

Mr. Smith having received the highest number of votes was d›clared duly elected Chief Clerk of the Senate.

Mr. Smith then appeared at the desk, the oath of office was then administered to him by the Lieutenant Governor, and he entered upon the duties of the office.

On motion of Senator Pettit,

The Sena e proceeded to the election of Sergeant-at-Arms.

The roll being called,

The following Senators voted for W. W. Baker:

Senators Belden, Cameron, Colladay, Davis, Flint, Foster, Griswold, Hall, Hazelton, Jones, Little, Magoon, Miner, Pettit, Pratt, Price Strong, Town and Williams-19.

The following Senators voted for F. W. Hundhausen:

Senators Baldwin, Burchard, Clark, Deuster, Huebschmann, Ives, Krouskop, Morgan, Reed, Rice, Schmidt, Walker and Woodman-13.

Mr. Baker having received the highest number of votes was declared duly elected sergeant-at-arms of the senate.

Mr. Baker then appeared at the desk, the oath of office was ad ministered to him by the lieutenant-governor, and he entered upon the duties of the office.

Resolved by the Senate, the Assembly concurring, That a joint committee of the two houses be appointed, consisting of two from the Senate and three from the Assembly to wait on His Excellency, the Governor, and notify him that the two houses are organized and ready to receive any communication he may be pleased to make. Which was adopted, and

Senators Williams and Burchard were appointed on the part of Senate.

By Senator Pratt :

Resolved, That the President of the Senate is hereby requested to invite the resident clergy of Madison to open the morning sessions of the Senate with prayer.

Resolved, That the rules of the last session be adopted as the rules of this until otherwise ordered by the senate.

By Senator Pratt:

Resolved, That the secretary of state be and he is hereby instructed to furnish to each member of this body, one copy of the revised statutes, ore copy of the general laws for each year and one copy of the senate and assembly journal for 1870.

Adopted.

The Senate took a recess for ten minutes.

RESOLUTIONS INTRODUCED.

By Senator Clark :

Res. No. 4, S.,

WHEREAS, It is alleged that since the last session of the Senate, Senator H. S. Town, of the 20th Senatorial District, and Senator R. E. Davis, of the 26th Senatorial District, have accepted the office of Postmaster, under appointment by the United States government, each at the place of his residence, there fore

Resolved, That it be referred to the committee on Judiciary to ascertain whether such alleged fact be true, and whether the seats of Senators Town and Davis did not thereby become vacant under the 13th section of the 4th article of the constitution of this State, and report the same to the Senate at as early a day as may be convenient.

Which was adopted.

MESSAGE FROM THE ASSEMBLY.

Mr. PRESIDENT:

I am directed to inform you that the Assembly has perfected its organization by the election of Wm. E. Smith, Speaker, E. W. Young, Chief Clerk, and S. S. Fifield, Sergeant-at-Arms, and is now ready to proceed to business.

Senator Williams, from the committee to wait upon His Ecxelleney, the Governor, informed the Senate that His Excellency wished to defer the delivery of his message until to-morrow.

On motion of Senator Griswold,

The Senate adjourned till 10 o'clock to-morrow morning.

And has appointed as such committee, on the part of the Assembly, Messrs. Hall, Swain and Pease.

For renewal of the grant of land to aid in the construction of a railroad from St. Clair riyer or lake to the west end of Lake Superior or Bayfield.

And has adopted and asks the concurrence of the Senate in

Mr. PRESIDENT:

I am directed to inform you that the Assembly is ready to receive the Senate, in joint convention, to hear the Governor's message.

The Senate repaired to the Assembly Chamber, to meet the Assembly in

JOINT CONVENTION.

Hon. Thaddeus C. Pound, President of the Senate, called the joint convention to order.

Senator Pratt moved that a Joint Committee of three, one from the Senate, and two from the Assembly, be appointed to wait upon the Governor and State officers, and inform them that the two Houses are in joint convention, and ready to receive the message. Which motion prevailed.
