Excerpt: ... PREFATORY NOTE. OME time ago, the Magistrates and Town Council requested me to prepare a Historical and Descriptive Account of the Scott Monument in this city. It was deemed advisable that this should be done, because the many visitors to the noble edifice have no opportunity at the present time of obtaining proper and authentic information regarding it. With the view of rendering the book more attractive, a Biographical Sketch of S1r Walter Scott has been prefixed, and other matter has been added, which may prove of some value to the general reader. It formed no part of my duty to offer any criticism j but I thought it might be interesting, as well as instructive, to append an extract from the Chester Courant, containing an Address on the Writings of Sir Walter Scott, delivered some years ago by the Right Hon. W. E. Gladstone. This has accordingly been done. For the use of the Wood Engravings of the Statue of Sir Walter Scott, and of that portion of Princes Street which includes the Scott Monument, I am indebted to Messrs A. & C. Black. It has been a pleasure to me to devote a few spare evenings to the preparation of the book; and I now fulfil my duty, adding, in the language of the Bankers, --' Errors excepted.' JAMES COLSTON. His father, Kaflfcgfl wh0 aso bore the name of his illustrious son, was a Writer to the Signet, in fair practice; and he again was the third child of Robert Scott, farmer, at Sandy-Knowe, in Roxburghshire, being lineally descended from the Scotts of Harden.
